Lesson Point Estimate of Population Proportion

This document contains instructions and activities for a statistics lesson. It includes directions to identify statistical symbols, a word scramble activity divided into groups, questions for students to answer about social issues and explain their responses, analysis questions to fill in proportions and convert to percentages, facts about population and sample proportions denoted by p and p-hat respectively and computed using a formula, and an example problem to find job satisfaction proportions from survey data. Finally, sample research questions are given for groups to present proportions using a PowerPoint on mobile phones.

REVIEW

Directions: Identify what the

following symbols represent.
1. µ 5. 𝑋ത
2 2
2. 𝜎 6. 𝑠
3. 𝜎 7. s
4. N 8. n
JUMP START
ACTIVIT Y
Directions: Word Scramble.
The class will be divided into 2
groups. Each group will race to
unscramble the list of letters
found at the screen to spell out
words.
1. Population
2. Point Estimator
3. Sample Mean

4. Proportion
ACTIVIT Y
Directions: The class will be asked different
questions starting with the phrase “Do you
agree that…”. These questions are about
social issues which they will answer
truthfully whether they agree or not. Then,
one representative for each question will
tell the class why he answered the way he
did.
Do you agree that teenagers
should now have access to
family planning methods?
Do you agree that
jeepney modernization
should be pursued?
Do you agree that
divorce should be
passed as a law?
ANALYSIS
1. How did you find the activity?
2. Fill in the blanks with the appropriate
numerical values.
For Question 1, there are _____ out of _____
who agreed to the statement.
For Question 2, there are _____ out of _____
who agreed to the statement.
For Question 3, there are _____ out of _____
who agreed to the statement.
3. Do you think the
answers in the previous
question may be
represented in fraction
form? How?
4. Since they were
represented in fraction
form, how are they
going to be converted
into percent form?
FACTS FIRST
The numerical values (both
the fraction form and the
percent form) that are
derived from the answers
are called proportion.
Proportion is a fraction
expression where the
favorable response is in the
numerator and the total
number of respondents is in
the denominator.
We denote 𝑝 as the
population proportion and
𝑝̂ “p hat” as the sample
proportion.
We compute 𝑝̂
to estimate p.
𝑿
The formula is 𝒑ෝ = where
,
𝒏
𝑥 is the number of sample
elements that possess the
desired characteristics and 𝑛
is the sample size.
•On the other hand we denote q ̂
“q hat” as the point estimate for
“not p”.
•We determine 𝑞ො by subtracting 𝑝Ƹ
from 1. In symbols, 𝑞ො = 1 − 𝑝Ƹ
Sample Problem:
•In a job satisfaction survey for the SPES
2019 in Laguna, 700 student employees
were asked if they were satisfied with their
jobs. There were 518 who responded with
a YES. What proportion is this? What
proportion responded with a NO?
Given data:
n=700 student employees,
X= 518- no. of those who
said YES.
𝑋
Compute: 𝑝Ƹ =
𝑛
518
𝑝Ƹ = = 0.74 or 74%
700
𝑞ො = 1 − 0.74
𝑞ො = 0.26 𝑜𝑟 26%
Conclusion:
Therefore, 74% of the
respondents were
satisfied with their jobs
and 26% are not.
APPLICATION
Directions: The class will be divided
according to their skills. One group requires
members who are good at drawing and the
other requires members who are good at
acting. Each group will be solving a problem
regarding the point estimate of population
proportion and presenting them according to
their assigned task.
NOTE: Each group will be given a
powerpoint presentation to be edited
using the WPS App on your mobile
phones. This will be used to present
the final answer to the class.
1. Lisa is a Grade 12 student who is currently
taking up the subject Practical Research 2. She
decided to have a research concerning high school
students in Kalayaan, Laguna on whether they
games online before they attend class or not.
From a total of 200 respondents, 95 of them
answered YES. What is the proportion of students
who play video games before attending classes?
What is the proportion of students who DO NOT
play video games before attending classes?
2. Susan is a Grade 12 student who is a classmate of
Lisa in Practical Research 2. She decided to have a
research concerning high school students in
Kalayaan, Laguna, whether they are in favor of
letting teenagers have the access to family planning
methods or not. From 300 respondents, 120
answered YES. A. What is the proportion of the
students who said YES? B. What is the proportion of
the students who said NO?
