INTRODUCTION
• Ayurveda gives importance to “SWASTHASYA
SWASTHYA RAKSHANA”.
• To maintain good health , Ayurveda explains many
concepts such as ahara vidi vidana, sadvrita,
dinacharya,ritucharya and also oushada sevana.
• In that acharayas have explained about taking of
anupana before or after or during the consumption of
food or medicine
• By the yukthi of Vaidya, a specific
anupana with specific dravya gives
specific effect in specific doshas and
rogas of a rogi.
• With different anupana a single oushada
dravya can be given in different rogas.

ANUPANA KARMA
DEFINITION AND DERIVATION OF
ANUPANA
• Anupana is a Vechile or Adjuvant (to aid).
• It is a substance used as a medium for the
administration of medicine and used to increase the
action of principal ingredient.
• Anupana should posses the properties opposite to
those of the aharas , but at the same time should not
contradict the qualities of the dhathus.
• The word anupana is derived out of 2 words
ANU & PANA
• The word “anu” is an “avyaya”and “upasarga
vishesha” which indicates different meaning like
lakshanam, aayaamaha etc..
• The English meaning of “Anu” are again , further,
thereupon, behind, then, next etc..
• The word “pana” derived by “lyut pratyaya” and
it means drinking, sharpening and protection.

SAMHITA KALA
• Charaka Samhita: Acharya charaka has dealt
about anupana in the context Annapana vidhi in
Sutrastana. After that in Krutanna varga, in Aharaproyogi
varga the detail description of anupana is given.
• In another context, Acharya described anupana for
different diseased condition like sthoulya, tandra and
alpagni etc.
• If specific anupana is not mentioned for a particular
dravya or a roga then one should choose anupana
according to desha and kala. From the list of 84 asavas
and other peyas like jala are advised which are to be
evaluated and then considered for administration.
• Sushruta Samhita: Acharya Sushruta
has described anupana in Anupanavarga
after the description of Manda peyathi
pathya kalpanas.
• Here detailed description of anupana i.e..,
different anupana dravyas, superiority of
the jala as anupana, properties,
contraindications, rules and regulation for
Anupana sevana are given.
SANGRAHA KALA
• Ashtanga Sangraha: In Ashtanga Sangraha
Anupana is explained in detail in Annapanavidhi
adhayaya. Here different Anupana dravyas for
different doshas,rogas and ahara dravyas, properties
of anupana,contraindication of jala as anupana, rules
and regulation while consuming anupana is given in
detail.
• Ashtanga Hrdaya: In Ashtanga Hrdaya concept
of anupana is explained in Matrasitteya adhayaya.
Here, different anupana dravyas for different rogas
and aharas,lakshanas of anupana,properties and

2. Based on time of

• Based on Raja nighantu:
1. Kramana: which administered in delay.
2. Pachana: which given in night
• Based on time of administration:
A.1.Aadi pana: to be taken prior to bhojana. eg. in sthoulya
2.Madhya pana:during or in between bhojana.eg.swasthya

3.Antah pana:pana taken after bhojana.eg. in karshya

• Based on usage:
1.Ahara upayogi in the context of ahara sevana
eg,.for pishtanna, sukhodaka as anupana.
2. Aushada opayogi: in the context of oushada
sevana.
eg. for snehapana, ushnajala as anupana
 MATRA
• Matra or dose is the amount of substance to be
taken.Proper dose should be followed to get
beneficial effects.
• The matra of anupana for different doshas are
not mentioned in any of the brihatrayee but in

IMPORTANCE OF ANUPANA IN
•CHIKITSA
Anupana or the food rejuvanents for food and medicine has
it's relevance and importance in ayurveda chikitsa.
• As oil spread in water medicine also spread by effect of
anupana.
• When medicine is administered with appropriate anupana
effect of drug get enhanced.At the same time consumption of
proper anupana after food does proper digestion even if the
quantityof food consumed is excess in quantity and quality.
• By the help of anupana, the properties of aushadha get
enhanced and helps to cure the disease.
CONCLUSION
Anupana is to pacify the atitikshna guna,vyavaye and
vikasi gunas of main drug eg. ghrita,takra,kshira.
It is to stimulate the action if the drug is less potent
eg. trikatu and gomutra.
To carry the drug to specific location where its action
is needed.For this a dravya possessing yogavahi guna
is needed. eg. madhu
A drava dravya is needed as an anupana for easy
swallowing of churna or gutika.
To create the palatability if the drug cannot be
swallowed because of reluctance.
