EXPONENTS AND RADICALS IN THE REAL WORLD Math Peta

Exponents describe how many times a number is used as a factor in multiplication and are useful for computing compound interest, while radicals involve roots and can be used to calculate the height of an object in free fall based on the acceleration due to gravity over time. The document provides an example using exponents to determine the total interest on a 3-year loan at 5% annual interest compounding annually, and an example using radicals to calculate how long it takes a skydiver to fall from 600 feet to 400 feet.

EXPONENTS AND RADICALS

IN THE REAL WORLD

What is EXPONENTS ?

The exponents of a number

says how many times to use
a numbers in a multiplication
IN WHAT REAL LIFE
SITUATIONS CAN YOU USE IT?
Exponents are important in
Investing and Finance. Money
invested that earns interest on
the interest, follows an
exponential rate of growth to
produce large amounts of
money.
For this example, let’s use
exponents to compute the
compound interest of a loan.
Compound interest can be thought
of as “interest on interest,” and will
make a sum grow at a faster rate
than simple interest. It includes all
of the accumulated interest of
previous periods of a deposit or
Situation:
Mrs. Cruz is planning to take a
three-year loan of P200,000 at
an interest rate of 5% that
compounds annually. What
would be the amount of interest?
Formula: CI = P [(1 + i)n – 1]

Whereas:
CI = compound interest,
P = principal amount,
i = annual interest rate, and

n = number of
compounding periods
CI = P200,000 [(1 + 0.05) – 1] 3

= P200,000 [(1.05)3 – 1]
= P200,000 [1.157625 – 1]
I
= P200,000 [0.157625] I

CI = P31,525 (total interest
payable over the three-year period
of this loan)
Note: Interest rate was turned into a decimal by
dividing by 100:
What is RADICALS?

 An expression that uses a

root, such as square root,
cube root.
IN WHAT REAL LIFE
SITUATIONS CAN YOU USE IT?
Radicals can be used to
describe the height of an
object in free fall after a given
time since we can quantify
the force of the earth pulling
on us – the force of gravity.
Situation:
A skydiver dropped from a
height of 600 feet. How long
does it take to reach a height of
400 feet?

Formula: h = h0
Whereas:
-16t 2
h = height measured in feet
ho = initial height from which the
object was dropped
t = time/number of seconds the object
had fallen
-16t2 = acceleration due to gravity
pulling the object towards the ground
h - h0 = -16t2 400−600
ට =𝑡
−16

h - 600 = -16t2
−200
ට =𝑡
−16
ℎ−600
ට = ξ𝑡2
−16
ξ 12.5 = t

ℎ−600 t = 3.54 seconds (for the skydiver to

ට =𝑡 be at a height of 400 feet)
