Sink Holes

This document discusses sinkholes, describing them as depressions in the ground without natural surface drainage. It identifies three types of sinkholes - solution sinkholes in areas with thin soil coverage, cover collapse sinkholes where bedrock is deeper under soil and earth, and cover subsidence sinkholes formed gradually over time. Sinkholes can be caused by natural processes like erosion or rainfall, or by human activities like mining, drilling or construction. The effects of sinkholes include changes to local topography and diverting underground water flows, which can damage property and lives. The document provides tips for preparedness, such as having an evacuation plan and supplies ready in case of needing to quickly leave an area prone to sinkholes.

SINK HOLES

SINK HOLE
—also known as a Cenote or doline, a
sink hole is a depression in the ground
that has no natural external surface
drainage
—formation of sink holes involve natural
processes of erosion
—this means that when it rains, all of the
water stays inside the sinkhole and
typically drains into the subsurface
HREE TYPES OF SINK HOLE
1. Solution sink
holes –
commonly seen
in areas that
have a very
thin cover of
soil in the
surface

2. Cover collapse
sink hole – occurs in
a place where the
bedrock is covered
by a deep layer of
soil & earth

3. Cover subsidence
sink hole – hole
formed over a period
of time and in which
the bedrock is
covered by soil and
materials which are
not well knitted
CAUSE
• SINKHOLES CAN BE CAUSED BY EROSION,
UNDERGROUND WATER OR RAINFALL—
Natural cause
• Mining, drilling, construction, broken
water ways or drain pipes, improperly
compacted soil after excavation work,
etc.—man made CAUSE
EFFECTS
• natural sink holes on land and oceans–
change of topography of the area
affected, divert streams of underground
water, damage to human lives and
properties
• Man made sink holes also have the same
effect but can be prevented in time
PREPAREDNESS
• BE READY TO EVACUATE YOUR HOME AT A MOMENTS
NOTICE IF NECESSARY.
• HAVE A GO BAG READY.
• CREATE A FAMILY PLAN FOR WHERE YOU WILL GO
AND A MEETING PLCE IN CASE YOU ARE SEPARARTED.
• PREPARE COPIES OF IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS AND
PUT IT INSIDE THE GO BAG.
PREPAREDNESS
• Practice a ‘plf’ (parachute landing dall) to protect
your bones. Try not to land straight up and stiffened.
• Carry a whistle that can help search and rescue
team locate you.
• Carry a mobile phone to call for help.
• IF YOU ARE IN A SINKHOLE DANGER AREA, CONTACT
YOUR INSURACE COMPANY AND ASK ABOUT
COVERAGE IN THE EVENT OF A SINKHOLE.
