Wireless Data Acquisition For A Bridge Collapse Test: Submitted By: Swapnil Hadake

This document describes a data acquisition system to monitor bridge loads and prevent bridge collapse. Sensors measure load and send analog signals to an Arduino, which conditions the signals. If a load exceeds a threshold, the Arduino triggers a GSM module or buzzer to alert traffic controllers. The system is intended to stop heavy vehicles from crossing bridges rated only for lighter loads. It aims to reduce bridge failures by ensuring traffic personnel respond promptly to overload warnings.

Wireless Data Acquisition for a

Bridge Collapse Test

What is DATA ACQUISITION
system ?

Data acquisition (DAQ) is the process of measuring an electrical or physical phenomenon

such as voltage, current, temperature, pressure, or sound with a computer. A DAQ system
consists of sensors, DAQ measurement hardware, and a computer with programmable
software. Compared to traditional measurement systems, PC-based DAQ systems exploit the
processing power, productivity, display, and connectivity capabilities of industry-standard
computers providing a more powerful, flexible, and cost-effective measurement solution.
In India there are numerous river bridges. Those bridges have the capacity of holding
only light weighted vehicles. The heavy vehicles are restricted to use those bridges. Those
bridges are seen just with a warning board alone. But in most cases the drivers of the
heavy vehicles may violate the rules and they may use the same bridge to cross the river.
This can result in the development of cracks in the bridge which eventually causes the
bridge to collapse

If load of the truck is more

than capacity, sensor senses
it and alarm starts buzzing.

Transducer in the system
• A transducer is a device that converts energy from one form to another.
Usually a transducer converts a signal in one form of energy to a signal in
another.
• In this bridge collapse system, Load sensor acts as a transducer .
• Load sensor senses the extra load and passes on the signal to ardino for
further process.
Signal Conditioning in the system
• Signal conditioning is the manipulation of a signal in a way that prepares it for the
next stage of processing. Many applications involve environmental or structural
measurement, such as temperature and vibration, from sensors.
• In this system, Load Sensor senses and sends the signal if the load exceeds than the
optimum load.
• This signal contains many impurities and also sometimes it is very weak and
sometimes very strong.
• Here Ardino acts as a signal conditioning device which generally converts the
signal into desired wave signal for output.
Analog to Digital Converter in the system
• An ADC converts a continuous-time and continuous-amplitude analog
signal to a discrete-time and discrete-amplitude digital signal. The
conversion involves quantization of the input, so it necessarily introduces
a small amount of error or noise.
• In this system, Buzzer alarm or GSM module acts as ADC as it converts
the analog signal from ardino to digital signal and sends to Computer
Room for record.

WORKING:

The system is used along with the check post in the entrance of the river
bridge. A load sensor is installed near the check post. When the vehicles
stop before the check post the weight of the vehicle is determined by the
load sensor. The analog value is then sent to the Arduino. If the value
exceeds the minimum threshold value, the warning message is sent to the
traffic control room via the GSM module. When the alert is given, the check
post is closed. Also the buzzer sound is alarmed if the message in the traffic
control room is neglected. This enables the heavy vehicles not to use the
river bridge. When the analog value red from the sensor does not exceeds
the threshold value, the check post remain open. If the traffic control room
personnel does not possess mobile phones or in the case when they forget
their phones to take with them, or if they neglect the message sent to them,
the buzzer will alarm without ease. This will ensure the traffic personnel to
act without negligence
Conclusion
This system can be used in all the river bridges. It ensures
the security of the river bridges. It can detect the entry of
heavy vehicles without error. This system if implemented in
the river bridges can reduce the bridge collapses
