ENDOMETRIOSIS

Endometriosis is a chronic oestogenic inflammatory disease where functioning endometrial tissue grows outside the uterine cavity, most commonly in the ovaries, pouch of Douglas, uterosacral ligaments, and broad ligaments. It affects 6-10% of women of reproductive age and risk factors include early menarche before age 11. Endometrial tissue can implant via retrograde menstruation, direct implantation, or through coelomic metaplasia and spread to sites through the lymphatic or vascular systems, with genetic and immunological factors also playing a role.
