Physic Exposure

This document defines torque and its key elements. Torque is a measure of the rotational effect of a force, defined as the cross product of the lever arm distance (r) and the applied force (F). It lists the members of a physics exposure group and provides details on how to calculate torque using the right hand rule to determine the direction of the torque vector based on the direction of r and F. It also notes that no torque is produced if a force is applied at the pivot point where the moment arm is zero.

TORQUE
Is the measure of a force which is acting upon an
object and that due to its effect causes the object to
rotate.
Elements
O: Called as the Pivot Point, it is the axis around
which the object rotates
F: Is the force
r: Called as the moment arm: is the distance measured
from the Pivot Point to the point where the force acts.
r is also a vector.
Torque is defined as
  T= r x F = r F sin().
Torque is the cross product between the distance
vector (the distance from the pivot point to the point
where force is applied) and the force vector, 'a' being
the angle between r and F.
The Right Hand Rule
It is used to find the direction of the torque vector.
Put your fingers in the direction of r.
Curl them to the direction of F.
Then the thumb points in the direction of the torque
vector.
Note:
The force applied, F, and the moment arm, r,
are independent of the object. Furthermore, a
force applied at the pivot point will cause no
torque since the moment arm would be zero
(r = 0).
