Space Structures: A Review On

The document discusses different types of traditional and modern structural systems, including beam-column frames, arch systems, truss systems, vaulted and domed structures. It then focuses on modern structures like reinforced concrete slabs and frames, tensile membrane structures, folded plate roofs, steel frames, space frames, and inflatable structures. The following section provides details on geodesic domes, their origins from Buckminster Fuller's work in 1954, and how they are based on mathematical principles mimicking atomic and molecular structures. It defines geodesics as great circle arcs forming a three-way grid on a spherical surface. The document also discusses polyhedra breakdown, common materials used in dome construction like steel bracing, and architectural

Geodesic Domes
Richard Buckminster Fuller
had made a
phenomenal impact on
Geodesics since 1954.
He claimed that they
are based on
mathematical principles
embodying force
distributions similar to
those found in atoms,
molecules and crystals.
What are Geodesics?
 The term 'geodesics' ascribed to the arcs
on a spherical surface.
 When applied to the architectural
structural systems, it becomes a frame of
generally spherical form in which the main
structural elements are interconnected in
a geodesic pattern of approximate great
circle arcs intersecting to form a three-
way grid.
Polyhedra
Breakdown

The
breakdown
process
reduces the
polyhedra to
smaller and
smaller nearly
identical
pieces.
Materials

 Domes enclose a
maximum amount of
space with a minimum
surface.
 Old domes: stone,
brickwork and timber.
 Now: steel bracing is
much more popular.
 Green material for
construction.
Architectural Applications

 completely
unobstructed inner
space.
 Old domes: exhibitions
halls, stadiums, water
reservoirs, and
storage tanks.
 Now: supermarkets,
restaurants, banks,
summerhouses, and
swimming pools.
