Mos U2.2

The document discusses simple stress and strain concepts including: 1. Hooke's law which states that stress is proportional to strain within the proportional limit, and defines Young's modulus. 2. Axial deformation of structural components under direct loading based on their material properties and dimensions. 3. Calculating the total axial deformation of components connected in series based on their individual lengths, areas, and Young's modulus.

Hooke's Law

► It states that, Under direct loading within proportionality limit, stress is directly
proportional to strain.
► Stress α Strain
►σ α e
► σ =Ee, where E is called as constant of proportionality and known as Young's
Modulus of elasticity.

► Assumptions of the Hooke's Law

1. Material is homogeneous.
2. Material is isotropic
3. Material is elastic

Modulus of elasticity(E)

► Young's Modulus of elasticity :It is slope of stress-strain curve under direct loading. It
is defined as ratio of direct stress to strain.
► It is denoted by E
► E=Direct stress/Linear Strain
► E=σ/e
► SI unit of Modulus of Elasticity (E) is GPa.

Axial deformation (δl) due to axial or direct Load

► Let us consider bar as shown in the figure

► If Bar is made of length(L) having cross section of width(B) and depth(D) under axial pull P,then

► Intensity of Stress (σ )=P/B×D N/mm2

► Intensity of Stress (σ )=P/A N/mm2
► Strain (e )=(δl/ l)
► Young’s Modulus (E)=σ/e
► Axial Deformation (δl)=PL/AE

Axial deformation (δl) of varying cross section in series

► Let us consider members connected in series as shown in the figure.

► It has length L1,L2 and L3 .

► It has area A1,A2 and A3 corresponding to respective diameter d1 ,d2 and d3
►As the material is same throughout so E1=E2=E3 =E
► The total deformation will be (δl) =δl1 +δl2 +δl3
► δl =P/E[(L1/A1 + L2/ A2 + L3/A3 )]

Brain Teaser Numerical:1

► A steel rod as shown in the figure of 20 mm diameter and 3000 mm length is subjected to force of
4000N,if E=200GPa,find the elongation.

Brain Teaser Numerical:1

► Solution:

► Area of Resisting section(A): π/4 ×(d)2 in mm2

► Area of Resisting section(A): π/4 ×(20)2=314.16 mm2
► Elongation (δl)=PL/AE
► Elongation (δl)=(4000×3000)/(314.16 × 200 ×103)
► Elongation =(12000000)/ (314.16 × 200 ×103)
► Elongation (δl) =0.19mm

Brain Teaser Numerical:2

► A brass bar as shown in the figure is subjected to tensile force of 40KN,if E=100GPa,find the
total elongation in the bar.

Page 12 Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education *

Brain Teaser Numerical:2

► Solution:
► Force=40KN=40×103 N
► L1 =200mm L2=300mm and L3=400mm
► (A1): π/4 ×(30)2=706.86mm2
► (A2): π/4 ×(20)2=314.16 mm2
► (A3): π/4 ×(40)2=1256.64mm2
►As the material is same throughout so E1=E2=E3 =E
► Total deformation=δl =δl1 +δl2 +δl3
► δl =P/E[(L1/A1 + L2/ A2 + L3/A3 )]

► δl =[40×103/100×103] × [ ]
► δl =0.4(0.28+0.95+0.32)
► δl =0.62mm.
