To Evaluate
What does it mean?
What do I think Evaluation is a judgement of
about what I’ve
read? something or someone.
If you are asked to
evaluate something, you
are being asked to
engage with a text or
topic and think carefully
about what is happening
and how that might
make you feel.
Component 1 Section A (20%)
This section will test your ability to read and respond to
an unseen extract (about 60-100 lines) from a story
from 20th century literature.

In a straightforward evaluation, you will:

• Show your understanding of the text
• Support your ideas with quotes
In a confident evaluation, you will:
• Give an overview of the text as a whole
• See patterns within the text
• Probe and explore the text in detail
• Use convincing and persuasive quotes to support your
opinion

To start, go through the indicated section and
think carefully about the following:
• What happens?
• Why does it happen?
• How do you feel about it?
• What does the writer do to manipulate your
feelings?
• How successful is the ending? (If appropriate,
reflect back on the rest of the story.)

- Use the word ‘because’ to help you explain how specific quotes affect your understanding
- Consider how the ending adds to your understanding of the entire story; ‘This is/isn’t
effective because…’ or ‘It adds tension because…’
