Definition of a Mind Map
• A visual thinking tool that uses mental functions such as memory, learning, creativity and
analysis
• It’s a graphic organizer for brief written ideas and how to link the related ideas on a "map”
• Uses words, images, numbers, color, logic, rhythm, and layout in a single space as a
powerful technique to show ideas and how they connect
• Similar to a Google road map, a mind map shows a journey from start to the finish of a
project or assignment that is organized and efficient to keep on track with the activity
Importance of Mind Mapping in Nursing
• Mueller, Johnston, and Bligh (2001) used the nursing process with
mind-mapping to teach critical thinking to nursing students on how to
think holistically about patients to see the connections in patient
assessment between problems and data such as vital signs and
physical assessment
Benefits
Planning
Communication
Be More Creative
Save Time
Solve Problems
Concentrate
Remember Better
Allows group and regroup concepts, & encourages comparisons between them
Requires concentration on subject that helps information transfer from short to long term memory
Three Basic Skills Of Idea Mapping
1.Identify key words – use an idea map with only essential words (and images) to meet objective or
purpose
2.Creating main branches - the purpose of activity is to determine main branches and sub branches
3.Drawing simple icons as imagery as the main greatest tool to integrate into the idea maps.
1. Start in the CENTRE of a blank landscape page orientation. Starting in the center
to spread out in all directions and to express more freely and naturally.
2. Use an IMAGE or PICTURE for central idea.
3. Use COLOURS throughout to stimulate the brain.
4. CONNECT MAIN BRANCHES to the central image and connect second- and third-
level branches to the first and second levels, etc. This forms connections
between the items as links
5. Make branches CURVED like branches of a tree as the ideas are growing
6. Use ONE KEY WORD PER LINE for power of focus and flexibility
7. Use IMAGES throughout for easy visual recall
