Medicinal Uses of Mushroom: Amit Prasad

This document summarizes the medicinal uses of mushrooms. It discusses that mushrooms have over 12,000 species worldwide, with about 2,000 being edible and a few hundred used for medicinal purposes. Mushrooms provide various health benefits such as increasing antioxidant activity, enhancing the immune system, managing blood sugar levels, and supporting brain health. Specific mushrooms also have antimicrobial, anticancer, and immunomodulator properties. Beta-glucan, predominantly found in fungal cell walls, is known to stimulate the immune system. Some mushrooms with potential anti-cancer properties are discussed. While mushrooms can have medicinal properties, some toxic mushrooms contain alkaloids and should be avoided.

INTRODUCTION

 A mushroom, is the fleshy, spore-bearing

fruiting body of a fungus, typically produced above
ground on soil or on its food source.

 There are over 12,000 wild species of mushrooms

worldwide and about 2000 species are edible.

 A couple of hundreds of wild species are used for

medicinal purposes.
HEALTH BENEFITS OF MUSHROOMS
 Increasing Antioxidant Activity

 Enhancing the Immune System

 Managing Blood Sugar Levels

 Supporting Brain Health

 Improving Exercise Performance

MEDICINAL ACTIVITIES OF
MUSHROOMS

 Antioxidant activity

 Antimicrobial activity

 Anticancer activity

 Immunomodulator activity

β-GLUCAN IN MUSHROOMS
 Is predominantly composed in the fugal cell wall
and is mostly composed of beta-D-glucose
 In many researches, beta-glucan effectively
stimulates the host immune response to defend
against bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic
infections.
 Moreover, it is known as biological response
modifier since it primarily achieves its disease
protective activity through modulating the host
immune system.
SOME MEDICINAL MUSHROOMS
WITH ANTI-CANCER POTENTIAL
TOXIC MUSHROOMS
There are some 70 to 80 species of mushrooms that are poisonous to humans; many of them contain toxic alkaloids .

CONCLUSION
 Several mushroom species have been pointed out
as sources of bioactive compounds, in addition to
their important nutritional value.

 In view of the current situation, the research of

bioactive components in edible wild and cultivated
mushrooms is yet deficient. There are numerous
potential characteristics and old and novel
properties, provided by mushrooms with
nutraceutical and health benefits, which deserve
further investigations.
