Echo Sounder: Made by Shimaa Hussien Toka Mostafa

This document discusses echo sounders, which are sonar devices that measure water depth. It describes how echo sounders work by transmitting sound pulses downward and measuring the time it takes for the echo to return, allowing it to calculate depth based on sound speed. The document outlines the key components of an echo sounder system, including the transducer that generates and receives sound waves and the display unit. It notes the advantages of echo sounders like their accuracy and low cost, as well as potential disadvantages and sources of error.

Agenda

Definition

Theory

Advantage

Disadvantage

Errors
An echo sounder
• It is type of sonar, specialized equipment which gives a boater
or fisher the ability to see below the surface of the water . It
gives information about the depth and shape of the bottom and
of any fish present
Construction
 Echo sounder system made up of two major parts
1- The echo sounder : this includes a display screen to present the
information
_ the transceiver to drive the transducer and receive echo
information and microcomputer to process the information

2- the transducer :it generates sound waves and receives the echoes of
those sound waves and present the information in the display screen
Theory
 Echo sounder measure the depth of water
 Short pulse of sound energy is transmitted vertically down
from the ship
 The pulse having been reflected from the sea bottom returns to
the ship in the form of an echo
 Travel time (t) taken for its return depends upon the depth of
water (d) and on the velocity of sound (v)through the water
 Time taken (t)=(2×d)/v or d=(v×t)/2
Advantage
1. Available
2. Relatively low cost
3. Provide highly accurate water depths and contours
4. Can be easily deployed on small boats and ships
Disadvantage
 Needed computer connection with out internal logging

 Needed external battery 12/24v

 Provided no logging software

 No real time display of values

Errors
1. Zero line adjustment error : if the zero adjustment is not
correct , the depth recorded will not be correct
2. Multipath error :the echo may be reflected a number of times
between the keel and the sea bed . There by giving multiple
depth mark on the records
3. Pythagoras error : this error is found when two transducer are
used one for transmission and other for reception
