Normal Distribution
Understanding the Normal
Distribution and the z-score
Aim for today:
Today, we will be able to define the properties of a
normal distribution and convert z-scores.
NORMAL PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTION
Also known as the bell curve associated with its graph, is a probability distribution for a continuous
random variable X.
Properties of a Normal Probability Distribution
1. The normal probability distribution is bell-shaped.
2. The curve is symmetrical with respect to the mean.
3. The mean is equal to the median and is also equal
to the mode .
4. The mean of the distribution is 0.
5. The spread of the curve depends on the standard
deviation of the distribution.
6. The tails of the curve flatten out indefinitely along
the horizontal axis.
7. The area under the curve is 1.

AREA UNDER THE CURVE
In identifying the area under the curve, use the z – table.
Example: Find the area between z = 0.15 and z = 1.08.
1. Find the areas of z = 0.15 and z = 1.08 at the z – table.
2. Subtract the smaller area to
the larger area.
The area between z = 0.015 and
z = 1.08 is 0.3003.

AREA UNDER THE CURVE
Find the area of the following z – scores.
1. z = 2.5
2. z = -1.4
3. Between z = 1.2 and z = 2.8
4. Between z = -2.3 and z = -0.3
5. Between z = -2.6 and z = 2.2

CONVERTING RAW SCORE TO Z-SCORE
In converting a raw score to a z-score, we need to use the following formulas.
z – score for population data z – score for sample data
Legend: is the z-score; is the raw score; is the population mean; is the population standard deviation; is the sample
mean; is the sample standard deviation
Sample Problem: The grade of Aura in Statistics and Probability is 82. If it is given that the pop. mean is 80
with standard deviation of 6, what is the corresponding z – score?

What z-scores bound the middle 95% of a normal distribution?
Step 1. Divide 95% by 2.
95% 2 = 0.4750
Step 2. Add the quotient to 0.5 to find the area bounding above the mean.
0.5 + 0.4750 = 0.9750
Step 3. Find the z-score corresponding to 0.9750.
Step 4. Subtract the quotient in Step 1 to 0.5 to find the area bounding below the mean.
0.5 – 0.4750 = 0.0250
Step 5. Find the z-score corresponding to 0.0250.
