Seminar On Literature - An Analyze Social Class in Anne Bronte's Agnes Grey (1847)

This document summarizes a research paper analyzing social class and discrimination in Anne Bronte's 1847 novel Agnes Grey using Marxist theory. The paper uses qualitative content analysis and Marxist sociolinguistic theory to examine how social class is reflected in the characterization of the main character Agnes. It finds that Agnes struggles with her responsibilities as a governess due to her lower social class status compared to the families she works for. Specific passages are analyzed showing other characters looking down on Agnes and dismissing her opinions due to her class. The paper concludes that Agnes is characterized as a hard worker but faces social class discrimination in her interactions with the upper-class families.

‘I shall not allow you to torture those birds. They must either be killed at once or carried back to
the place you took them from, that the old birds may continue to feed them.’

‘But you don’t know where that is, Madam: it’s only me and uncle Robson that knows that.’ “said
Tom”

‘But if you don’t tell me, I shall kill them myself—much as I hate it.’

‘You daren’t. You daren’t touch them for your life! because you know papa and mamma, and
uncle Robson, would be angry. Ha, ha! I’ve caught you there, Miss!’

...... ; but your Uncle Robson’s opinions, of course nothing to me.’ “ Said Agnes”

The characterization of the main character “Agnes Grey”

Based on the conversation above Agnes is seen struggling with responsibility as a
governess/ teacher even though she is not seen by her student “Tom”
Social class and Discrimination
The last two sentence what Tom said looks to show he and his family has power and
looked down on Agnes
The last sentence “of course nothing to me” means all that Agnes said would be useless
and not heard because her status “lower classes”
