1st Presentation

This presentation summarizes a CFD analysis of the ventilation system in the engine room of an inland cargo ship. It covers topics such as the objectives to ensure proper air flow distribution and heat removal, a literature review on previous related CFD studies of ship engine room ventilation, and the methodology using governing equations and simulation software. The presentation provides an introduction on the goals of an effective ventilation system and outlines initial progress made in understanding the problem and reviewing relevant research papers to develop an appropriate CFD model.

INTRODUCTION

 Ventilation system affects engine room equipment performance, lifetime and crew
working environment .
 The aim of a well designed ventilation system implies:
 To supply fresh air to engines for combustion purposes .
 To remove unwanted heat from main engines , auxiliary generators , and other heat
sources .
 To fix temperature in an exact interval so that crews can operate there .
Literature Review

There are few studies regarding on application of CFD in ventilation of marine engine rooms .Some of
those:
• Thermal profile of marine ship’s engine room through simulation techniques .
• 3-D simulation of ventilation system in a closed engine room using CFD .
• Ventilation analysis in a ship engine room .

Identify points with high level of heat concentration so that appropriate ventilation system can
be designed in order to realize a proper temperature condition .
Research Objectives

 To develop a CFD model to compute the temperature field by designing the

most suitable ventilation system for inland cargo vessel .
 To develop air flow rate in the engine room .
 To ensure the even distribution of internal air flow rate and heat concentration
in the engine room .
METHODOLOGY

Governing equations used: Conservation of mass , momentum and energy laws .

RNG K-ἐ(Epsilon) model and Semi Implicit Method for Pressure Linked Equation(SIMPLE)
algorithm are used to solve the governing equations .

Soildworks and Star CCM+ simulation soft wares are used for simulation and CFD analysis .
Progress

Understanding the problem

Going through some related

research papers

Trying to develop an arbitrary model
