the features of Suspense Story
• Suspense is a literary device that
authors use to keep their readers’
interest alive throughout the work.
• It is a feeling of anticipation that
something risky or dangerous is
about to happen.
When reading stories that include suspense and mystery,
readers can feel:
• scared or frightened;
• worried or anxious;
• excited or thrilled;
• Goose bumps or shivers;
• concerned as to what might happen next;
• keen to read on!
 

How to Create Suspense:

. • simile and metaphor;


• the use of ellipsis;
• short, snappy sentences;
• using sentences that appeal to the senses.
How Do the Features Help Build Suspense

• Ellipsis shows a long pause, which can be used as a

use of ellipsis cliffhanger so the reader wonders ‘what happens next?’ It


also shows pauses in the middle of action to create a sense of
hesitation about the outcome.

sentences feel like they are panicking or breathing more quickly.
Suspense makes you stay on your toes. You
never know what will happen.
