education professor at
the YMCA. He invented

gymnasium on January 20,1892 with nine
players.
Officially played in the 1936 Olympics.
History
The game involved elements of American
football, soccer, and hockey, and the first ball
used was a soccer ball. The goals were
wooden peach baskets affixed to the walls.
1897-1898, a team of five became standard.
1898- the first pro league, the national

POSITIONS OF PLAYERS
Point guard
usually the fastest player on the
team, organizes the team’s offense by
controlling the ball and making sure
that it gets to the right player at the
right time.
POSITIONS OF PLAYERS

the basket closely and rebound (on defense).
POSITIONS OF PLAYERS
Small forward
Often responsible for scoring points via cuts to the
basket and dribble penetration; on defense seeks
rebounds and steals.
Power forward

basket: on defense, plays under the basket against
the opposing power forward.

-This shot requires the player to be
in motion toward the basket, and to
“lay” the ball “up” and into the
basket.

with both hands at the same time or they

On defense, you often will find yourself needing to
run after the opponent, especially during fast breaks.
