SET

<<
REVIEW
1. Who introduced the concept of set ?

Georg Cantor
2. What is set?
 Set is a collection of definite and distinguishable objects selected by
the means of certain rules or description.

 Set is a collection of different elements.

 Set is denoted by a capital symbol.

 Set is enclosed by braces { }.

 Every element in the set is separated by a comma.

3. What are the three representations of set?

1. Descriptive form

2. Roster or Tabular form

3. Set builder from

3. What is the symbol for set of integer?

Z
4. What is the symbol for set of odd numbers?

O
5. What is the symbol for set of prime numbers?

P
6. What kind of set represents this symbol " E"?

Set of even numbers.

7. What kind of set represents this symbol “ W"?

Set of whole numbers.

8. What is the descriptive form of:
{2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24}

C=Set of positive even numbers less 25

9. What is the tabular form of:
Set of all natural numbers which can divide 24
completely?

A={1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24}

10. What is the set builder form of:
Set of odd numbers between 20 and 35?

B:{x : x ∈ O ˄ ≤20 x ≤35}

CARDINALITY OF SET

Number of element in the set is called cardinality of set. If a set

has an infinite number of elements, its cardinality is ∞.

 Examples:
A= |{1, 3, 5,7}|
Number of elements in set A is 4.

B= |{1, 2, 3, 4, 5, …}|
Number of elements in set B is infinite.
TYPES OF SET
Singleton set

1
It is a set contains only one element.

Example: A= {1}
B= {0}
C= {2}
Finite set

2
 A set consisting of definite number of elements
in which number element is finite.

Example:
A= {1, 3, 5, 7, 9}
B= {2, 4, 16, 25, 36, 49}
C={1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24}
Infinite set

3
A set with infinite number of elements.

Example:
A= {negative integers}
A= {-1,-2, -3, -4, -5, -6, -7 …}

B= {whole numbers greater than 10}

B= {11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 …}
Equal set
Two set A and B consisting the same elements are said to

4 be equal sets.

Example1: A={1, 3, 5, 7, 9}
B= {9, 7, 5, 3, 1}
C= {1, 5, 9, 3, 7}
A=B=C

2. X= {1, 2, 3}
Y = {1, 3, 5,}
X ≠  Y

3. S = {1, 1, 2}
T= {1, 2}
S=T
Equivalent set
  Two sets A and B are said to be equivalent if their
cardinal number is same.

5  The symbol for denoting an equivalent set is ‘↔’.

Example: A = {1, 2, 3}
B = {p, q, r}
Therefore, A ↔ B.

F = {1, 3, 5, 7}
G = {2, 4, 6, 8}
Therefore, F ↔ G
Null set/ Empty set
 It is a set with no element.

6  Symbol for empty set or null set

Example: A= { }
Subset
  A set S is a subset of another set T if every element of S
is an element of T. it is written as (read as ‘S is a

7 subset of T’)

 The symbol means ‘is a subset of’

 The symbol means ‘is not a subset of’

Example: A=
B=

S=
T=
