Finding Rate, Base and Percentage
A percent word problem has three values:
the base (B) or whole, the rate (R) or
percent, and the part (P).
What is Percentage Base and Rate?
The base is the total or the whole or the
starting point. It serves as the basis in the
calculation of the percentage.
The rate is just the given number in %.
The percentage is the part of the whole
based on the given percent and base. Also
referred to as the portion.
The Formula
Denote the base as B, rate as R and percentage as P.
P=BxR R=
B=
Example
Sallie was able to buy a blouse at 35% discount. If the original
price is P850, how much discount was she able to avail? How
much is the discounted price?
Unknown = Percentage
Given: Base = P850; Rate = 35% or 0.35
Formula: P = B x R
Solution: P = P850 x 0.35 = P297.50
Answer: Amount of Discount is P297.50
Discounted Price = Original Price – Discount
Discounted Price = P850 – P297.50
Answer: 552.50
Example
For being the top 2 of her batch, Patricia was offered a 25% discount on her
tuition fee for the following semester. If she only paid P51 000, how much is her
tuition fee?
Unknown = Base
Given: Percentage = P51000; Rate = 75% or 0.75
Formula: B = P ÷ R
Solution: B = 51 000 ÷ 0.75 Answer: P68 000
Example
In a recent sale, Michelle was able to buy a microwave oven for P12 500. If the
original price is P15 625, what is the rate discount.
Unknown = Rate
Given: Percentage = P12 500; Base = P15 625
Formula: R = P ÷ B
Solution: R = 12 500 ÷ 15 625 Answer: 0.80
or 80%
