Balanced Diet: Food and Nutrients

A balanced diet contains all necessary nutrients in the proper amounts to meet daily nutritional needs. It should include carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water in amounts varying depending on individual energy needs and lifestyle. Maintaining proper hydration through water consumption is also essential, as the human body is largely made up of water and loses it through normal daily functions.

Balanced diet

Food and nutrients

What is a
balanced
diet?

Such a diet which contains

all the nutrients in right
amount is called a balanced
diet
Daily reference intakes for adults: 2000 calories

Nutrient Amount
Total fat Less than 70g
Saturated Fatty Acids Less than 20g
Carbohydrates At least 260g up to 310g
Total sugars 90g
Protein 50g
Salt (sodium) less than 6g
Fiber 30g

However, an individual's intake may vary depending on their energy needs and lifestyle.

Vitamins and minerals are also essential nutrients for the body, but they are not converted into energy.
Let’s compare

VS
Don’t forget to drink
water!!!

• Did you know that people can go for up

to three weeks without food?
• Water is a different story. We can
survive without water only a few days.
Water is necessary for life!
• Seventy-five percent of your body is
made up of water. As an adult, it’s 70%.
• You lose water every day through sweat
and urine and need to replenish what is
lost. And fever, vomiting or diarrhea will
also cause water loss.
The 5/20 rule is the nutrition principle
you've never heard of but need to know

5% DV (daily value) or less of a nutrient

per serving is low, and 20% DV or more of
a nutrient per serving is high.

Example:
 If you want a product low in added
sugar, for example, 5% DV is good
 if you want an item high in fiber, 20%
DV or more is good.
