Pharmaceutical Packaging Guide

This document provides an overview of pharmaceutical packaging concepts. It defines packaging as enclosing or protecting products for distribution, storage, sale, and use. The objectives of packaging include barrier protection, containment, information transmission, marketing, security, convenience, and portion control. Primary packaging directly contains the product. Secondary packaging groups primary packages together, and tertiary packaging is for bulk handling, storage, and transport. The document discusses packaging materials, systems, components, symbols used on labels, and factors that influence packaging choice.

2
Definition of Packaging:
A product is not acceptably formulated except it is properly packed

Packaging is the science, art and technology of

enclosing or protecting products for distribution,
storage, sale, and use.

Packaging also refers to the process of design,

evaluation, and production or fabrication of packages

3
NEW CONCEPT:
PHARMACEUTICAL PACKAGING is now referred as

DRESS CODE OF ANY PHARMACEUTICAL PRODUCT.

 Colorful blister package

 Beautiful transparent bottles

 OTC Products

 Ethical point of view

Packaging can be described
as a coordinated system of
preparing goods for transport,
warehousing, logistics, sale,
and end use 4

6
Purpose of packaging:
•Pharmaceutical packaging has to be carried out for
the purpose of the safety of the pharmaceutical
preparations in order to keep them free from
contamination, hinder microbial growth, and ensure
product safety through the intended shelf life for the
pharmaceuticals.
•Packaging is a critical tool in the pharmaceutical
industry for product delivery and regulatory compliance,
many pharmaceutical companies will do all their
packaging within a contamination free environment or
Clean room.

Goal: Customer specific device with increased quality and patient safety
PACKAGING SYSTEM :

PACKAGING TYPES :
Primary packaging is the material that first envelops the
product and holds it. This usually is the smallest unit of
distribution or use and is the package which is in direct contact with the contents

Secondary packaging is outside the primary packaging –

perhaps used to group primary packages together

Tertiary packaging is used for bulk

handling , warehouse storage and transport
shipping. The most common form is a
palletized unit load that packs tightly into
containers
9
1 PACKAGING :
•It is the material that first envelops the product and
holds it

•It is in direct contact with product

•It has direct effect on shelf life of product

•Eg. Aerosol spray can, skin packs , wrappers, bottles

etc

•It should not have any adverse effect on product

10
PRIMARY PACKAGING MATERIALS :
PRIMARY PACKAGING MATERIALS GLASS : Glass has been
widely used as a drug packaging material.   Advantages of glass:
It allows easy inspection of the containers contents. It is available
in variously shaped containers. Disadvantages of Glass: - It is
fragile It is expensive when compared to the price of plastic

2 PACKAGING : And (ACCESSORIES)

• Outside of primary packaging

• Used to group primary packages together

• E.g. Boxes ,cartons , shrink wrap

• Some ancillary products are supplied so as to aid use of
pharmaceutical products

• E.g. Dropper with Eye and Ear drop

SECONDARY PACKAGING MATERIALS

SECONDARY PACKAGING MATERIALS

• PAPER
•CARTON DIFFERENT TYPES OF
SECONDARY PACKAGING :
•Paper and boards Cartons
•Corrugated fibbers
•Box manufacture
Tablets in a blister pack, which was
itself packaged in a folding carton made
of paperboard
14
3 PACKAGING :
• It is used for bulk handling and shipping
• e.g. crate, barrel , bulk container
• Tertiary packaging is used for bulk handling ,
warehouse storage and transport shipping. The
most common form is a palletized unit load that
packs tightly into containers

Symbols used on Packages and
Labels :
Many types of symbols for package labelling
are nationally and internationally standardized.
For product certifications, trademarks, proof of
purchase, etc.
 Identification code .
 Fragile

 Keep away from sunlight
 Keep away from water
