Eccentric Relation Kiana Tadayon

This document defines and describes eccentric occlusion, which refers to tooth contact that occurs during lateral or protrusive movements of the mandible. There are two types of eccentric occlusion: functional occlusion, which includes canine-guided occlusion and grouped lateral occlusion during lateral jaw movements, as well as protrusive functional occlusion during forward jaw movement; and non-functional occlusion, which involves tooth contact on the opposite side that the jaw is moving towards. The document also discusses methods for recording eccentric jaw relations graphically.

ECCENTRIC OCCLUSION

By Kiana Tadayon
Definition
 Eccentric occlusion refers to contact of teeth that
occurs during movement of mandible.
 Eccentric occlusion can be of 2 types:-
 1 - Functional occlusion.
 Lateral function:
1- Canine guided occlusion.
2- Grouped lateral occlusion.
 Protrusive functional occlusion.
 2 - Non functional occlusion.
FUNCTIONAL OCCLUSION
 Also called as the Working side occlusion.
 It refers to the tooth contact that occur in the segment
of the arch towards which the mandible moves.
LATERAL FUNCTION OCCLUSION
 It includes contacts that occur on canines and
posterior teeth on the side towards which the
mandible moves.
 It is divided into two parts:-
1- Canine guided occlusion. 2- Grouped lateral occlusion.
CANINE GUIDED and
GROUPED LATERAL OCCLUSION…
CANINE GUIDED OCCLUSION:
During lateral mandibular movements the

opposing upper and lower canines of the

working side contact thereby causing
disclusion of all posterior teeth on the
working and balancing side.

GROUPED LATERAL OCCLUSION:

In addition to canine guidance when certain

other posterior teeth on the working side

also contact during lateral movement it is
called as Grouped lateral occlusion.
PROTUSIVE FUNCTIONAL
OCCLUSION:
Itincludes eccentric contacts that occur when the
mandible moves forward.
The mandibular anterior teeth contact along the lingual

inclines of the maxillary anterior teeth while the

posteriors dis occlude
NON FUNCTIONAL OCCLUSION
 The tooth contacts that
occur in the segment
away from which the
mandible moves.

 For eg:-if the mandible

is moved to the left side
contacts occur on the
right side.
METHODS OF RECORDING
CENTRIC RELATION
 Eccentric jaw relation to be recorded are protrusive and lateral.
 The graphic method of making maxillomandibular relation
records is performed at same sitting position.
 After mandibular cast has been mounted in eccentric relation,
the recording device is replaced in patients mouth.
 A distance of 5-6mm is measured from the apex of the arrow
point tracing and the protrusive tracing is marked
 The patient is instructed to protrude until the point of stylus
rests the mark.
 Lateral relation can be recorded & used to establish lateral
guidance on certain adjustable articulators, but they cannot be
used like semi adjustable articulators.
 Graphic methods are used in the same manner as protrusive
relation recorded except that records required are one of right
laterals and one of left laterals.
 Hanau recommended a formula to arrive at an acceptable lateral
inclination
 L = (H/8) + 12
 Where L = lateral condylar inclination in degrees
 H = horizontal condylar inclination in degrees as established by
protrusive relation records

 Summary
 Once the occlusal rims are individualized, the jaw relations are
established& finally recorded. Establishing the jaw relation is an
important step in the fabrication of complete dentures. Orienting
the upper & lower denture in the correct horizontal & vertical
relation to each other is important for the esthetics, health &
comfort of the patient as well as proper functioning of the
dentures. In final analysis it is the experience & judgment of the
operator & to some extend the patient himself, which helps in
 determining what is right for the patient.
