Input Devices

Definition: Input Devices enable user to

enter information and command into the
computer.
Examples of Input Devices
Keyboard

It contains grid of
buttons called
keys.We press the
keys to put data in the
form of words and
number inside the
computer.
Mouse Douglas Engelbart in 1964 invented mouse made of wood.

A mouse is a small pointing

device that allows us to put data
inside a computer by using the
point ,click and drag actions. It
is used to point, select and open
files or folders on the screen. It
is used to draw pictures. The
cursor is the arrow that moves
on the computer screen when
the mouse is moved.
Scanner

Scanner are used to enter information directly

into the computers. This device works like a
photocopy machine. There are several types of
scanners. Most of them look like a flat tray
with a glass pane and a lid to cover it.
Types of scanners:-
1. Flat bed scanner.
2. Sheet fed scanner.
3. Hand held scanner.

Voice Input Systems

This device converts spoken

words to machine language
form.A microphone(mic) is
used to convert human words
into electric signals.It is often
used to record and store your
voice or any other sound such
as music and songs.
Digital Camera

To convert graphics into

digital form.A Changed
Coupled Divide i.e.(CCD)
and an electronic chip are
used in digital cameras.When
light falls on the chip through
the lens,it converts light
waves into electrical waves.
Light Pen

It is an input device used to

draw lines or figures on a
computer screen. It is like a
pen you use to write on
paper.In this case you use
the light pen to write or
draw on the computer
screen directly.
Output Devices

An output device is any device used

to send data from a computer to
another device or user. The output is
meant for humans is majorly in the
form of audio or video.
1.MONITORS. 2.PROJECTORS 3.SPEAKERS.
.

4.HEADPHONE 5.PRINTERS.

Monitor(VDU) Visual Display Unit

A monitor is a Visual display Unit is the

most commonly used output device.
It is used to visually convey information as
text ,graphics and video.
They look like a TV and uses CRT or LCD
or LED technologies to display information.
The output that we get on monitor is called
soft copy.
There are three types of
Monitor:-
 CRT (Cathode Ray Tube)Monitor
 LCD(Liquid Crystal Display)
Monitor
 LED (Light Emitting Diode)
CRT Monitor and LCD Monitor

Both monitors produce

Whereas LCD monitors
sharp images but CRT
are much thinner and
monitors are generally
lighter and consume less
less expensive and
electricity.
consume more electricity.
Projector

A projector is a device that

projects an image onto a
screen or others surface.
Projectors are used for
screening movies,
presentations ,to share
visual information on the
screen for everyone to see.
Printer

 A printer is an output device which

takes out information from the
computer screen on a sheet of
paper.
 The sheet of paper with the
information printed on it is called
the printout and they are called as
hardcopy.
Classification of Printers
Impact Printers

 These printers make contact with paper.

 They usually form the print image by pressing an inked ribbon
touching the paper using pins.
 Dot Matrix, Daisy Wheel and Line Printers fall under this category
of printers.
Dot Matrix Printer

Dot Matrix technology uses a

sequence or matrix of pins to create
printed dots arranged to form
characters on a piece of paper.
Daisy Wheel Printers
It is an impact printing technology
and uses interchangeable pre formed
type elements each with typically 96
glyphs(an elemental symbol) to
generate high quality output.
Line Printer
They print one whole line of text
before moving to another line.
Line printers are mostly linked with
unit record equipment and the early
days of digital computing, but the
technology is still in use.
Non Impact Printers

These do not touch the paper while printing.

They use chemical ,heat or electrical signals to sketch the
symbols on paper.
Inkjet and Laser printers fall under this category of
printers.
Inkjet Printer

It is a type of Printer that creates a

digital image by propelling
droplets of ink onto paper.
Inkjet printers are the most
commonly used type of printers
these days.
Laser Printer
 These Printers translate data into
printable image data.
 They follow the principle of
xerographic(xerox machine).
 A laser beam discharges photo
sensitive drum.
 A latent image is created on drum
during development process toner is
attracted to the drum surface and
then transferred to the paper.
Speakers
Speakers help us to
listen to the sound
coming from a
computer.When we
listen to the music
on a computer ,we
use the speakers to
listen to the sound.
Headphones

Headphones are special type of

speakers that are designed to be
placed close to the users ears. They
are used when we want to listen
to music etc. without disturbing
others.
Computer Memory

Computer memory is a physical device capable of

storing information temporarily or permanently.
There are primarily two type of memory devices:-
Primary Memory
Secondary Memory
Primary Memory

This memory is divided into two parts:-

1. RAM (Random Access Memory)
2. ROM (Read Only Memory)
RAM (Random Access Memory)

 It stores the data temporarily.

 It works like a blackboard which can
be constantly overwritten with new
data.
 The information is lost when you
turn off the computer or the power
goes off ,which means it is volatile
memory.
ROM (Read Only Memory)

 It keeps data permanently.

 It is non volatile in nature.
 It means instructions stored in ROM
cannot be changed and are not lost
when the computer is switched off.
Secondary Memory is also
known as Auxilliary Memory or
Backup Memory.
Secondary
Memory
It is used to store information for
longer period.
Types of
Storage Devices
 Harddisk
 Pendrive
 CD
 DVD
 FlashDrive or
Pen drive
 Memory Card
Harddisk

Hard Disk is the main storage device of a

computer .
It is fixed inside the CPU box.
CD/DVD

CD stands for Compact Disc and DVD stands for

Digital Versatile Disc.
These are round, shiny disks that are used to store
information permanently.
A DVD has more capacity to store data than a CD.
We use a DVD drive to read information from a CD

or DVD.
CD is of three types

 CDROM- It is read only memory and you cannot add or

remove anything from it.
 CD-R- You can record data in it but cannot edit it.
 CD-RW – You can write and erase both on this type.
Therefore ,they can be used again and again.
Blu Ray Disc

 It is the newest form of storage devices.

 Itlooks exactly like a CD or DVD but is
blue in colour.
 Itgets its blue colour from a blue violet
laser rays which are used to read the data
stored in it.
 It can store 10GB and even more data in
it.
PenDrive /USB Flash Drive

Pendrive is a very small sized storage device.

These are USB ports given in the CPU Box

where the Pendrive can be attached.

It can store more information than a CD/DVD.

It can store 2TB data or even more.
Once the data is stored you can delete or make

changes to it.
