What comes to mind?
• The study of the relationship between “Us” and
“Environment”
• Abiotic Components
• Biotic Components
2 Factors Shaping the Ecosystem
• Abiotic Components
Are physical and/or the chemical factors that act
on the living organisms at any part of their life
These components support the living organisms in
order for them to grow and develop
refer to non-living physical and chemical elements
in the ecosystem

Biotic Categories
• Producers
Are those organisms that create their own food.
• Consumers
Obtain energy and nutrients from producers as they cannot make
their own food.
Carnivore and Herbivore
• Decomposers
are any of various organisms that return constituents of organic
substances to ecological cycles by feeding on and breaking down
dead organism

Nutrients in the Environment
• Nutrients are chemical substances found in every
living thing on Earth and they are essentials to the
living organisms.
• Plants and other autotrophs absorb nutrients from
soil and water to make their own food in the form of
sugar or carbohydrates.
Nutrient Distribution
Nutrient Pollution
• Although life depends on nutrients, too many nutrients can have a negative
impact on an ecosystem. The following are facts about eutrophication:
• a. Fertilizers are often used in farming, sometimes these fertilizers run-off into nearby
water causing an increase in nutrient levels.
• b. This causes phytoplankton to grow and reproduce more rapidly, resulting in algal
blooms.
• c. This bloom of algae disrupts normal ecosystem functioning and causes many
problems.
• d. The algae may use up all the oxygen in the water, leaving none for other marine life.
This results in the death of many aquatic organisms such as fish, which need the oxygen
in the water to live.
• e. The bloom of algae may also block sunlight from photosynthetic marine plants under
the water surface.
• f. Some algae even produce toxins that are harmful to higher forms of life. This can
cause problems along the food chain and affect any animal that feeds on them.
