UNIT – II
WORK STUDY, METHOD STUDY & WORK MEASUREMENT
WORK STUDY
Work Study is a generic term for management
services and system engineering techniques, used to
investigate:
– Methods of performing work (Method Study).
– The time taken to do it (Work Measurement).
Production – converting raw material into
finished goods
Productivity = Output / Input
Where,
Input may be men, machine, material, method,
market, etc.
Output may be product or service.

Means of increasing Productivity
Improved working conditions
Improved working methods
Reduction of non productive time
Proper motivation
Proper maintenance of machines
Proper production planning and control
Proper material control
Training of workers
Modernization of plant & equipment
Safety
Importance of Work study
1. By method study
Working condition
Work content is reduced
Workers efficiency is increased
Plant layout is increased
2. By work measurement
Ineffective time is reduced
Production time is standarised
Importance of Working condition
Lighting and ventilation
Temperature and ventilation
Safety and healthy
Layout and house keeping
Noise and vibration
Ergonomics
METHOD STUDY
Method study is the technique of systematic
recording and critical examination of existing and
proposed ways of doing work and developing an
easier and economical method.
