o It is a global network of computers to exchange information.
o The internet is the global system of interconnected computers that uses the
internet protocol suite(TCP/IP) to communicate between networks and devices.
o It is a network of networks of private, public, academic, business, and government
networks of local to global scope.
o It is linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless, and optical networking
technologies.
o The internet carries a vast range of information resources and services, such as
inter-linked hypertext documents, world wide web, electronic mail.
o The word internetted was used as early as 1849.
o The word internet used in 1974 as the shorthand form of internetwork.
Applications Of Internet
o Download programs and files
o E-Mail
o Voice and video conferencing
o File sharing
o Information browsing

Disadvantages of Internet
o Theft of personal information such as name, address, credit card numbers etc…
o Spamming refers to unwanted E-Mails in bulk, which provides no purpose.
o Virus thefts nothing but a programming which disrupts the normal functioning of
your system
Intranet
o Internal company network that uses internet standards (HTML, HTTP, TCP/IP
protocol) & software.
o Accessed only by authorized persons, especially members or employees of the
organization

Intranet Security
o There are two levels of security required:
1. Internal : it can be imposed by public ley security & Encryption Key.
2. External: Through Firewall
What is Fire wall?
o Security device located between firm’s internal network (intranet) & external
network (internet)
Applications of Intranet
o Access of employee database
o Distribution of circular/office orders
o Submissions of reports
o Sharing of information of common interest

Disadvantages
o Unauthorized access
o Limited bandwidth for the business
o Information overload lowers productivity
o Denial of service
Extranet
o Extranet is an intranet for outside authorized users using same internet technology
o Inter-organizational information system.
o Enable outsiders to work together with company’s employees.
o Open to selected suppliers, customers & other business partners.

Examples:
1. Dealers / distributors have to access to product file such as;
a. Product specifications
b. Pictures
c. Images etc…
Components of extranets

Some basics infrastructure components such as the internet including:

o Improved quality
o Lower travel costs

WEBSITE

o A website is a set of related web pages typically served from a single web domain.
o A website is a collection of web pages, images, videos or other digital assets that is
hosted by one more web servers.
o The pages of a websites can usually be accessed from a common root URL called
the homepage and usually reside on the same physical server.
o This information is usually in HTML or XHTML format and may provide navigation
to other web pages via hypertext links.
o Web pages are requested and served from web using Hypertext Transfer Protocol.
