friends with a party at
their favorite café in

• He wrote his first article
(“Amor Patrio”) abroad.

busy writing his second
novel “El
Filibusterismo”.
• Contributed for La
Solidaridad using the

• He stayed at Ghent
because the cost of
printing is cheaper.
• After the publication of

began writing his third

• He opened a medical
clinic wherein his

ophthalmology.
• He met Dr. Feodor Jagor

Philippines, a book that
Rizal admired because
of its keen observances

setting.
• With the help of
Maximo Viola, Noli Me
Tangere was published.
• He wrote the poem “A
Las Flores de
Heidelberg”

• Accompanied by his
friend Maximo Viola.
• They visited Ferdinand
Blumentritt.
• Rizal and Viola parted
ways in Geneva.
Japan
February – April 1888
• Rizal studied the habits
and customs of the
Japanese people, their
language, theaters and
commerce
• He wrote Blumentritt
about the honesty,
courtesy,cleanliness and
industry of the Japanese
people. However, he
also expressed his
disgust on the use of the
mandrawn jinrikisha.
United States

• He was placed in
quarantine for 6 days on
board the Belgic
anchored off San
Francisco Bay.
• Rizal boarded at the
Palace Hotel, San
Francisco, California. He
went around for
observation of the city.
• He left New York for
Liverpool on board the
City of Rome.
• He was onboard in a
steamer which was “the
second largest ship in the
world” – The Great

Beckett family.
• Rizal also wrote his first
article in La
Solidaridad, a patriotic

“Indios Bravos” , an
association which
envisioned Filipinos
being recognized for
being admirable in
many fields

Malayos” which aimed
to propagate useful
knowledge

the resort city of Biarritz
on the fabulous French
Riviera.
• He was the guest of the
Boustead family.
• He had finished the last
chapter of his second
