Fukushima Nuclear disaster
By Timothé and Lucas
INTRODUCTION:
- Date: Friday 11 March 2011
- Where: Okuma Fukushima prefecture Japan
- What: Explosion of one reactor
- Context: Earthquake of magnitude 9
impacts Japan provoking a Tsunami
- INES level 7: major accident
What was Fukushima Daiichi nuclear
power plant?
- When: constructed in 1970
- Who: Tokyo electric power company
- Electric power: between 460 and 1100
megawatts
- composed of 6 reactors
- One of the biggest Nuclear power plant
in the world
- Implanted next to the ocean for the use
of the water
What happened?
- The 11 of March 2011 the Tohoku Earthquake created a
Tsunami of 5 meters that prevented the station from drowning
- A bit later, another tsunami of more than 14 meters, drowns the
generators that cooled down the reactors
- no more power in the station, security offline
- temperature keep increasing
- evacuation of populations around three miles around the power
plant
- In the following days, the interruption of cooling led to the partial melting of the core of three of the
six reactors, hydrogen explosions that further damaged the facilities and slowed down rescue
operations. Radioactive material is released into the atmosphere
and sea water.
- Poor communication of the japanese government on the crisis.
Consequences of the - Radiocaesium (radionuclides) caused damage to
agriculture and the soil’s health as it spread
Fukushima disaster on - Radionuclides also damaged the water coasts
and remained in these areas for years and years
the environment - plants and animals in the area were contaminated
and put in danger as the toxicity from
radionuclides like Iodine dispersed in their habitat
- Food, water supply and agriculture also were
intoxicated by the nuclear eruption
- enormous amounts of the ocean’s water were
infected and had to be filtered as they hurt the
ecosystem and the habitats of different species
The fukushima incident released
radionuclides locally and globally as the
weather and conditions spread them
over seas and continents.
Contamination rose significantly as
radionuclides dispersed regionly.
Fukushima effects on our
population
● The exposure of Iodine to humans,
especially children could enter their
thyroid gland and increase the rate of
thyroid cancer to japan’s population
● many people’s homes were evacuated
and never returned to as the area was
too dangerous to live in
● the food many locals ate was
contaminated by radionuclides that had
spread in the agriculture.
● The tsunami and disaster of nuclear
explosion caused a lot of stress and
even deaths in the region, therefore
being a tough thing to go through
The process took many years to have an effect
Decontamination procedures as these types of accidents are rare and
relatively new. In fact, parts of Japan are still
being cleaned up and certain restrictions are
As the contamination of radionuclides increased still present. This disaster had a huge effect on
around japan and the areas surrounding it. A the environment and all the people, making this
procedure of decontamination was put into place to decontamination plan essential to make Japan
reduce the toxicity around. all the regions that were
a safe place to live in for its population.
most affected by the explosion were evacuated and
blocked off. the government installed a plan in which
the radionuclides would be decontaminated so that
the places were safe for people to be in and it
stopped spreading around Japan. TEPCO is a
radioactive water treatment system that was
installed in the plan to reduce the infection of the
waters. This is an example of the few protocols put
in place for the whole process.
What happened after
Laws and regulations:
Drastics changes
food safety regulations: establishment of new standards for
radiation levels in foods.
Nuclear regulatory agency and new standards for nuclear plants
were created.
strengthen his awareness to possible new catastrophes
only 9 of the 64 nuclear power plant located in Japan are still
working after a important verification of every power plant.
Japan leaves Sinop nuclear power plant project
