INTRODUCTION
A structure is a system of interconnected parts assembled in
a stable configuration to support external loads acting on it.
The structural members are connected together by providing
different types of joints or supports.
Types of supports - pin-jointed or hinged, roller support and
fixed support.
Elements of a building structure - beams, columns, slabs,
walls, footings, stairs, etc..
3D MODELLING OF STRUCTURES
Is a mathematical representation model of
the physical structure in three dimensions
with the help of specialized software.
Shall be developed judiciously based on
the architectural inputs & MEP services.
3D model shall represent properly the
spatial distribution of the mass & stiffness
of various structural components.
3D MODELLING OF STRUCTURES
Model shall consist of interconnected
structural components configured with
appropriate joints / support conditions/
specifications.
Developing 3D model of structure by any
of the manual methods is lengthy,
cumbersome & tedious.
Hence, it is essential to rely on
computerized programs / software for
creating 3D model of any structure.
SOFTWARE FOR 3D MODELLING OF STRUCTURE
STAAD – PRO
ETABS
STRAP
Tekla Structures
SAP / ANSYS / RISA etc.
Among the above software, Staad-Pro & Etabs are more popular.
INTRODUCTION – STAAD PRO
STAAD [Link] a structural design program software.
It is used for 3D model generation, Analysis and design of any structure.
It supports steel, concrete and timber design codes
HISTORY OF STAAD PRO
[Link] was originally developed by Research Engineers
International in Yorba Linda ,CA.
In late 2005, Research Engineer International was bought by
Bentley Systems. 24
ADVANTAGES OF STAAD PRO
Cover all aspects of structural engineering
Broad spectra of design codes i.e. National & International
Quality assurance
Comprehensive Reports & documentation
CODE CONSIDERATIONS- RCC BUILDINGS
IS 875-Code of Practice for design loads (other than earthquake) for Buildings
and structures ( All parts )
IS 1893 -Criteria for earthquake resistant design of structure Foundations
IS 456 -Code of Practice for plain and reinforced concrete
*NOTE-LATEST EDITION OF THE ABOVE CODES ARE USED
STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS
Line elements – 2 noded Ex: Beam, Column etc.
Plate elements - 3 or 4 noded Ex: Slab, Shear Wall etc.
Solid elements – 4 to 8 noded Ex: Block foundation
IN STAAD..
Node becomes Joint ,it has a number and xyz coordinates
Beam becomes Member, it has a number and nodes at its ends
Plate becomes Element, it has a number and nodes at its corners
Solid becomes solid, it has a number and nodes at its corners

LOAD CASES TO BE ADDED
DEAD LOADS
LIVE LOADS
SEISMIC LOADS
WIND LOADS
After creating various load cases we have to assign them to the
structure. For this we have to first select that part of the structure
on which load has to be assigned and then assign it to that part

add load case
details
In case of structure subjected to wind and earthquake forces wind and seismic
definitions need to be provided After providing these only the load cases
should be entered

ANALYSIS IN STAAD
After, all the above stated steps structure has to be analysed. Analysis of a
structure means to find out the reactions and displacements and deflection
at various nodes of a structure. After analysis we are able to see shear
moment and deflection for each member
[Link] can run the
analysis here!
After performing analysis window which contains a report of
analysis gets opened. This window shows the warning and errors
which might have occurred
In the post processing mode we are able to be see the reactions,
displacement ,deflections, shear force and bending moments for
various members

DESIGN
After the analysis, a structure has to be designed to carry loads
acting on it, considering a certain factor of safety.
In India structures are designed by using various Indian codes for
both concrete and steel structures.
The design in [Link] support over 70 international codes and
over 20 U.S. codes in 7 languages.
After designing the structure it is again analysed and results of
analysis for each beam and column is shown in output file
CONCLUSION
Staad pro is widely used by most of the organization for their construction needs.
Unfortunately , well skilled staad pro engineers are very hard to search.
By attending this [Link] session we were able to learn various feature of
[Link] which will be very helpful in the near future.
