DEFINING SOCIAL WORK
The following definition was approved by the IFSW General Meeting and the IASSW General
Assembly  in July 2014:
Global Definition of the Social Work Profession
“Social work is a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change
and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people. Principles of
social justice, human rights, collective responsibility and respect for diversities are central to
social work.  Underpinned by theories of social work, social sciences, humanities and
indigenous knowledge, social work engages people and structures to address life challenges and
enhance wellbeing.”
Social work is a profession devoted to helping people function as well as they can within their social
environments and to changing their environments to make that possible (Sheafor & Horejsi, 2006).

PURPOSE OF SOCIAL WORK
 The purpose of Social Work is to enhance a mutually beneficial relationship between individuals
and society in order to improve the quality of life for all.

 Thus with this purpose, Social Workers strengthen individual capacities and skills so that
individuals can perform effectively and take advantage of opportunities in the environment. At
the same time, Social Workers enhance the effectiveness of structures in society that provide
resources and opportunities, and remove social barriers so that individuals can achieve their
goals in life.

 The purpose could therefore be argued to have two key sections:

a) Improving individual skills, knowledge and capacities so that the individual can function
effectively in the environment.
b) Removing barriers in the social structure and in the social delivery system that serves as
obstacles to individual achievement.
GOALS OF SOCIAL WORK
 The goals translate the general purposes into more specific directions for action. The
purpose drives and influences the goal. Goals are often more concrete and specific
steps which together reflects the general purpose of social work explained above.

The goals of social work are to:

 1. Enhance people’s capacities to resolve problems, cope and function
effectively
 This can be done by teaching clients new skills ( for instance anger management
skills, parenting skills, alternative methods of disciplining children without the
use of a cane, social skills among others).
