Classification paragraphs
NB: Classification paragraphs start with a topic sentence (T). The group is explained (E).
Examples of members of the group are essential to classification. (E). Without members, there is
no group. There should be at least three members of each group. Evidence follows (E). Each of
the three members can be further explained (E). Then the paragraph can be summarised or the
significance of the group to the whole TOPIC can be articulated (S).
Classification Body Paragraph
Comedy is one category of the American cinematography. A comedy is a kind of movie with a light, humorous tone and a
happy or cheerful ending and in which the central theme is the triumph over adverse circumstances (James 212). Comedies
can be sorted into Romantic comedy, “Black” comedy and Teen comedy. Romantic comedies are the feel-good types that
tug at the heart strings while tickling the funny bone and usually ends with the couple in eternal bliss. Legally Blonde, The
Holiday, and Crazy Rich Asians are classified as romantic comedies. According to (Time 20), movies of this kind sell the
hope that there is someone for everyone despite physical appearance, education level and economic status. As another
member in this category, “Black” comedy looks at the funny side of things that are usually considered to be very serious;
death and illness. The Cable Guy, Pulp Fiction and The Grand Budapest Hotel are examples of “black” comedy. Black
comedies provide the coping mechanisms to treat with serious and tragic life experiences. A recent study revealed that
persons who enjoy these types of movies were highly rational and less aggressive (Doward 217). Also in this category is
Teen comedy which is targeted at teenagers and young adults and in which the plot is based upon the interests of teenagers;
coming of age, first love, rebellion, conflict with parents, teen angst or alienation. Some adults may enjoy teen comedies
for nostalgic purposes. These types of movies typically portray high school or first-year college-aged individuals who get
into all kinds of situations. In this genre, serious matters are presented in a stereotyped or trivialized way. The Princess
Diaries, Mean Girls and Easy A can be classified as Teen comedies. Teen comedies are the key to understanding puberty
for a lot of people (Womack 202). Each class of comedic movie is not only integral to the American cinematography
landscape, but also to the American society.
