Lithosphere and the
Earth’s Processes
SLIDESMANIA
LITHOSPHERE
The lithosphere is the rocky outer
part of the Earth. It is made up of
the brittle crust and the top part of
the upper mantle. The lithosphere is
the coolest and most rigid part of
SLIDESMANIA
the Earth.
TYPES OF LITHOSPHERE
Oceanic lithosphere is
produced at ocean ridges, where
hot magma rises, and then cools to
form plates as the material moves
away from the spreading center.
As the plate cools, heat flow

decreases and the seafloor
TYPES OF LITHOSPHERE
Continental lithosphere
consists of the continental crust
and, typically, some
nonconvecting part of the
underlying upper mantle, it is
thicker than its oceanic

counterpart and does not subduct.
LITHOSPHERIC PLATES
The surface of the Earth is broken up into large plates.
When we talk about tectonic or lithospheric plates, we mean
the rigid sections of the lithosphere that moves as one unit.
The surface of the Earth is divided into 7 major and 8
minor plates.

THE EARTH’S PROCESSES
The physical processes on Earth create constant
change. Earth surface processes include earthquakes
and earth surface motions, sediment production,
erosion, and deposition.

Sediment Production
The Earth is covered by a series of

Deposition
(Plate Tectonic Theory).
Plate tectonics are also responsible
for landforms such as geysers,
earthquakes, and volcanoes.

Sediment Production
Erosion
Deposition Sediment production is defined as the
generation of fresh soil through the
weathering of bedrock, landslides,
gully erosion, volcanic eruptions, and
so forth.

Erosion
Deposition Erosion is the geological process in
which earthen materials are worn
away and transported by natural
forces.

in which sediments, soil and rocks

IMPORTANCE OF EARTH’S
PROCESSES
Earth surface processes are important for scientific,
engineering, environmental, and economic reasons. Many of
the Earth surface processes responsible for landforms
involve the formation, erosion, transport, and deposition of
sediment.
