Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Here are the answers to the quiz questions: 1. a. LT245/40 R 18 93 W - LT245 = Tire size (width 245mm) - 40 = Aspect ratio (sidewall height as % of width) - R = Radial tire - 18 = Rim diameter in inches - 93 = Load index - W = Speed rating (maximum speed this tire can be used) 2. Three purposes of wheel balance are: - Reduce vibration - Increase ride comfort - Increase tire life 3. Types of TPMS: - Indirect TPMS (uses ABS sensors, low cost) - Direct TPMS (has sensor on each wheel, more

Tire pressure monitoring system

(TPMS)
TPMS
 Is a system that detects low tire pressure
and warns the driver
 The system alerts through a dashboard
indicator light.
Effects of low tire pressure
 Reduce fuel economy (3 psi lower pressure
increases fuel consumption by 1%)
 Reduce tire life by 10%
 Increased number of roadside faults
 Reduces handling and braking efficiency
Benefits of TPMS
 Improving vehicle driving safety
 Lowering risk of accident
 Environmental friendly
 Extended tire life
 Increased fuel efficiency

 Save fleet operation cost

 Reduce fuel consumption
 Extended tire life
Types of TPMS
 Indirect TPMS
 Do not measure actual tire pressure
 Uses wheel speed sensor to detect difference
in speed (4 channel ABS)
 Speeds of diagonal wheels will be compared

 Direct TPMS
 Uses tire pressure sensor on each wheel
Indirect TPMS..
 If a tire is underinflated
 It
will have smaller diameter
 Rotate faster

 Advantage
 No need of additional components
 Low cost
Indirect TPMS..
 Disadvantage
 Can not detect if more than one tire is low
inflation pressure
 Does not meet the Federal Highway Traffic
Safety standard
Direct TPMS
 Component parts of direct TPMS
 Tirepressure sensor on each wheel
 Antenna
 Transceiver
 Display unit or warning light/lights
 Control unit
TPMS receiver
 Receive voltage signal from pressure
sensor via antenna
 Supplies energy to the sensor by
generating field
 Can be integrated with the display unit
TPMS receiver…
 The wireless receiver is housed in one of
the following locations:
 Remote keyless entry receiver
 Body control module
 Door module
 Individual antenna near wheel
Functions of display unit
 Monitor pressure/temperature whether
the vehicle is moving or stopped 24 hrs a
day
 It will automatically rotate from axle one
to the axle four/six or…
 It shifts data by axle around every 4
seconds
Tire pressure sensor
 All direct TPMS sensors transmit tire
inflation pressure to ECU using a radio
frequency signal
 Also measures tire temperature
 The sensor is powered by:
3 volt battery that lasts 7 to 10 years
 Generated field from TPMS receiver
Types of pressure sensor
 Are two types:
 External sensor
 TPM-R
 TPM-S

 Internal rim mounted sensor

 Banded
 Valve stem mounted
Internal pressure sensor
 Banded type : (mounted to the wheel with
stainless-steel strap)

 Valve stem mounted

Valve stem VS banded sensor
External sensor
 TPM-P (Flow-thru)
 Is attached to the valve-stem and has
locking screw to prevent sensor lose
 Battery is not replaceable
External sensor…
 TPM-R
 Is attached to the valve-stem and has
locking screw to prevent sensor lose
 Has user replaceable battery
Display unit
 Displays the following:
 Low tire pressure
 High pressure warning
 High temperature warning
 Leakage warning
 Pressure baseline setting
 History data storage
Identification of tire with TPMS

Conventional valve
TPMS sensor stem
stem
Modes of operation
 Alert mode
 If rapid change in pressure is detected
 It transmits every second/800ms

 Sleep mode
 It transmits every hour or 6 hours
 Active mode
 It transmits once every minute at a speed of 32km/h
Warning light
 If low pressure is detected the warning light is
on and not flushing
 If fault is detected the warning lamp flushes
 Defective pressure sensor
 A fault in the receiver

 Some models use two warning lamps:

 thelow/flat tire warning light…
 Service low tire pressure warning system
Warning message and
warning light
 Check tire pressure, (message displayed)
 Tirepressure less than 30psi
 Audible warning and warning lamp are on

 Warning tire very low,(message displayed)

 Tirepressure below 25psi
 Audible warning and warning lamp are on
Warning message and
warning light…
 Tire pressure monitoring fault
 If
module or all sensors are defective
 Warning lamp flushes for 20 seconds

 Tire pressure sensor fault

 If
one or more sensors are defective
 Warning lamp flushes for 20 seconds
