Acute Pharyngitis

Acute pharyngitis is an inflammation of the pharynx mucosa that usually occurs as part of an upper respiratory tract infection. The most common causes are viral or bacterial infections, but it can also be a symptom of diseases like measles or whooping cough. Signs include a sore and dry throat, fever, malaise, and possible white pus pockets with strep infection. Treatment focuses on rest, a light diet, pain relief, and nonirritating gargles. Antibiotics may be given for bacterial infections. A potential complication is a secondary infection.
