Phase Change of Matter

The document discusses phase changes of matter, describing the different states of matter as solid, liquid, and gas. It explains the processes of melting, freezing, evaporation, condensation, sublimation, and deposition that occur when a substance changes between these states, often involving the absorption or release of heat energy. Examples are provided of phase changes that occur in daily life to illustrate these concepts.

‘’Heavenly Father, we thank you for
giving us a wonderful and blessed day
a head. We ask you Almighty Lord for
unending wisdom that we can use
today. As well as provide my Teacher

PHASE
CHANGE OF
MATTER
LESSON OBJECTIVES

01 describe what happens during a phase change in terms of the

arrangement and motion of atoms and molecules;

represent through drawings the arrangement of atoms and

02 molecules during a phase change; and

03 recognize the importance of phase change in our daily life.

WHAT IS PHASE CHANGE
OF MATTER?

The term “change of phase”

means the same thing in “change
of state”, which occurs among
solids, liquids, and gases.
3 STATE OF MATTER

SOLID LIQUID GAS

EXAMPLES:

ICE GLASS OF WATER VAPOR

WATER
What happens during phase
change?
During phase change, heat energy is either released or
absorbed. When heat energy released the
molecules/particles slow down and move closer
together. But when the heat energy is absorbed the
molecules/particles speed up in moving and expand.
MELTING
is the transformation process in which
solids change into liquids.
Ex:
1. when ice melts
2. melted butter
3. melted candle
FREEZING
is the reverse process of melting obtained by
cooling a liquid until it freezes.
.
Ex;
1. Water to ice
2. Lava Hardening into Solid Rock.
3. Solidification of Melted Candle Wax
EVAPORATION
is the process when the molecules of a liquid
break away and change into a gas.
Ex;
1. Drying clothes under the sun
2. Boiling water
3. Ironing of clothes
CONDENSATION
is the reverse of evaporation, where gas
changes into a liquid.
Ex;
1. Moist in soft drinks can
2. morning dew
3. clouds
SUBLIMATION
is the process where solid directly changes into
a gaseous phase without passing through the
liquid state.
Ex;
1. Dry Ice sublimes
2. Moth Balls
3. Room fresheners which are used in toilets sublimes.
DEPOSITION
is the reverse process of sublimation in which
a gas changes directly to a solid without
going through the liquid state.
Ex;
1. Water vapour transforms directly into ice
2. Frost
Question 1

Have you encountered one of the phase change of

matter in your daily life? What ? And how?

Question 2
What do you think the importance of phase change of
matter in your daily life?
Classify the following situations on what phase change has taken place. Write the letter
of the correct answer.

A. Evaporation
B. Condensation
C. Melting
D. Freezing
E. Sublimation
F. Deposition

1. Drying clothes under the sun 9. Frost forms on a leaf
2. Melting of ice 10. Water to ice
3. Using mothballs or naphthalene balls 11. Dry ice
4. Droplets on a can of soda 12. Drying of wet hair
5. Water vapor to ice 13. Formation of snow
6. Clouds 14. Morning dew
7. Melting of butter 15. Frozen foods sublime
8. Boiling of water
