LEADERSHIP

NCO LEADERSHIP
NCO LEADERSHIP
• Leadership – it is defined as the process of influencing people
by providing purpose, direction, and motivation to accomplish the
mission.

• NCO Leadership – the proficient manner on how a NCO

performs his/her function, duties and responsibilities depending on
the position held or level of authority in mission accomplishment.
NCO LEADERSHIP
• NCO provides purpose if he explains the essence of any given
mission when he captured and understood clearly the intent of his
superior/commander.

• NCO provides direction when he gives clear instructions to

subordinates as to what, why, when, who and how to do things,
and orients priorities and standards.

• NCO motivates subordinates by taking care of their welfare, treating

them equally and fairly, and by setting example for them to
emulate. Spells out clearly the specific role and the importance of
each in the over-all mission of the unit/organization.
NCO LEADERSHIP TRAITS
1. Character
2. Competence
3. Commitment
4. Credibility
CHARACTER
• Generally describes a person’s personality and discipline.

1. The moral ability to refrain from immoral temptations.

2. The emotional ability not to give-up when pressured.

3. The mental and physical ability to still focus during adversities.

4. The good manners developed and nurtured being displayed

(how one acts, talks, dress, and deal with others).
COMPETENCE
• The ability to deliver excellent result of works nurtured from
training and education, experience, and self-development.

• In essence, it is not measured in a person’s intellectual ability,

profession, or position.

• For example, an intelligent officer who is a member of the Corps of

Professor, but without experience as a Platoon Leader in an Infantry
unit is not competent to teach Infantry Platoon or Squad Battle
Drills.
COMMITMENT
• Dedication to duty.
• Willingness to sacrifice personal comfort, privilege, and/or interest
in the performance of duty.
• Being with your men in times of crisis.
• Giving extra efforts in attending to the needs of your men.
• Prioritizing a certain task done over privilege.
CREDIBILITY
• The entirety of character, competence, and commitment.

• It speaks of a person’s trustworthiness, reliability, sincerity,

believability, and authority.

• Each trait is interrelated, interconnected, and

interdependent with one another. The absence of one defies
credibility.
NCO SUPPORT CHANNEL (SC)
• The NCO Support Channel encompasses the various
positions that members of the NCO Corps can occupy in the
military hierarchy as determined by general and special
orders.

• Is parallel yet subordinate to the Chain of Command.

• The NCO Support Channel, with its own level of authority is

not independent or separate from the Chain of Command.
