- media such as radio and
television that reach target
audiences using airwaves as
the transmission medium
BROADCAST MEDIA
The term broadcasting refers to the airborne
transmission of electromagnetic audio signals or
audiovisuals signals that are readily available to wide
population via standard receivers.

Radio Broadcasting
* The invention of radio began with telegraph.
* Another great invention was that of Alexander Graham Bell’s
telephone.
* Experts aim to abolish the limitations of telegraph wire and it was
credited to Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi. He transmitted a
message which was picked up w/o any need for wired connection.
In doing so , age of broadcasting began.
* Initially
radio has been further developed to aid military. It
became a necessity for ships and naval fleets.
* When the war ended in 1918, the Golden Age of radio began.
Radio Broadcasting
* The first ever commercially owned radio station was KDKA owned
by Westinghouse Electric Corporation of Pittsburg. They used
radio for entertainment.
* Other manufacturer soon followed Westinghouse’s example –
American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) who was the
first to broadcast paid advertisement on its stations.
* Radio also played a vital role in ending WWII after the bombings
of Hiroshima and Nagasaki when the Japanese emperor used radio
to appeal for surrender.
TV Broadcasting
* Unlike the radio, the invention of television was initially
prompted by commercialism.
* The earliest notable development was that of German inventor
Paul Nipko where he was able to successfully transmit image in
1884.
*3 communications technology powerhouses – General Electric,
Westinghouse and RCA cooperated and pooled their resources
together in the development of TV.
* The 1930’s began the age of TV broadcasting to the public.
Despite the rise in television stations, and its growing reach to
American homes from 1960s, viewing remained scarce.
TV Broadcasting
*This scarcity ended when tv networks offered
to transmit programs by cable to paying
subscribers –cable televisions-started in 1980s.
* A decade later the number of stations
increased from 600 to 1040 commercial and
public stations reaching 98% of homes in the
United States.

a point, it is synonymous to the
words: join, unite, intersect,
merge, connect, coincide

media sources join together.
It allows media texts to be
produced and distributed on
multiple media devices.
