Assessment

• It is the process of defining, selecting,


designing, collecting, analyzing, interpreting,
and using the information to increase
students' learning and development.
• Assessment is integral to the teaching-
learning process.
Assessment
• Classroom assessment is generally divided
into three types: assessment of learning,
assessment for learning, and assessment as
learning.
Assessment of learning
• helps identify if students are meeting grade-
level standards.
• usually grade-based
• communicates student achievement to
teachers, parents, students, school-level
administrators, and district leaders.
Assessment for learning
• is an ongoing assessment that allows teachers
to monitor students on a day-to-day basis and
modify their teaching based on what the
students need to be successful.
• This assessment provides students with the
timely, specific feedback that they need to
make adjustments to their learning.
Assessment as learning
• Assessment as learning actively involves
students in the learning process.
• This form of assessment is crucial in helping
students become lifelong learners.
• Students develop a sense of ownership and
efficacy when they use teacher, peer, and self-
assessment feedback to make adjustments,
improvements, and changes to what they
understand.
Types of Assessments of Learning
• Diagnostic assessment
• Formative assessment
• Summative assessment
• Ipsative assessment
• Norm-referenced assessment
• Criterion-referenced assessment
Diagnostic assessment
• Also known as pre-assessments
• Diagnostic assessments provide a snapshots of
understanding useful to “diagnose”
knowledge, strengths, and gaps.
Diagnostic assessment
• Assesses a student’s strengths, weaknesses,
knowledge, and skills prior to instruction
• A baseline to work from
• Done at the beginning–of the school year,
beginning of a unit, beginning of a lesson.
Examples
• Short quizzes
• Journal entries
• Student interviews
• Student reflections
• Classroom discussions
• Graphic organizers (e.g., mind maps, flow
charts, KWL charts)
Formative assessment
• Used during a course or other ongoing
learning sequence.
• It evaluates understanding for the purpose of
providing data to revise planned instruction.
Examples
• Portfolios
• Group projects
• Progress reports
• Class discussions
• Entry and exit tickets
• Short, regular quizzes
• Virtual classroom tools
Summative assessment
• Summative assessments are used at the end
or after learning.
• A way to evaluate the success of both the
performance of the students and the quality
of planned instruction.

• Producing an independent study project
Ipsative assessments
• to measure or track the progress of the
individual by comparing his or her
performance, or scores, against his or her own
previous performances or scores.
• reflects a ‘personal best’ or sense of progress
• Also known as self-referenced assessments
Examples

Norm-referenced assessments
• Compares a student’s performance against
other students (a national group or other
‘norm’)
• are tests designed to compare an individual to
a group of their peers, usually based on
national standards and occasionally adjusted
for age, ethnicity, or other demographics.
• Also known as demographic assessments
Norm-referenced assessments are most useful when measuring
student achievement to determine:

• Language ability
• Grade readiness
• Physical development
• College admission decisions
• Need for additional learning support

• Standardized college admissions tests like
UPCAT
Criterion-referenced assessments
• Measures a student’s performance against a
goal, specific objective, or standard
• a bar to measure all students against
• Professional licensing exam
• high school exit exams
• citizenship tests
• Criterion-referenced assessments are most often compared with norm-
referenced assessments.

• Criterion-referenced assessments don’t measure students against their


peers.

• In criterion-referenced assessment, each student is graded to provide


insight into their strengths and areas for improvement.

need to learn, how it will be taught, and how
learning will be measured.
