DHL U.S.

Company
Angelos, Brice, Fletcher, Kassady, Mckenzie,
Wasilios
Benefits (McKenzie)
● Providing an employee with a benefit package is an important part in attracting and retaining employees. Providing these
shows a company cares about your health and your future. The benefits they provide is an important factor in deciding which
company to work for. “It's important to do your research on the companies benefits they provide before going for an
interview because you should never ask about the benefits along with the pay during the interview” (Dr. Giunta, October 26,
2021)
● DHL employees rate the companies benefits and perks a 70/100. DHL is ranked #2 in Fortune's world's 25 best workplace in
2020. (Fortune, 2020)
● Ch 13: Describe the company's benefit packages for their employees. (Dessler)
- Some of the most popular benefits packages DHL offers includes:
- A 401 k
- Paid holidays/ vacations
- Life insurance/ disability
- Paid sick leave
- It is a casual dress work atmosphere
- You are able to receive any education/training/tuition/certification reimbursement
- A company cell phone
- Some extra incentives that include travel discounts for flights, car rentals, cruises, hotels, camping, and rv’s
Training and Development (Wasilios)
Ken Allen CEO DHL of E-commerce. DHL implemented the Certified International Specialist (CIS) program - an extensive training
for all employees on the principles of international shipping and DHL’s strategy. DHL’s approach to training stands out for a few
reasons:

● Instead of outsourcing trainers, DHL leaders and people managers became facilitators and trainers, becoming experts
themselves in the process (Willis, July 20, 2020)
● This in-house approach strengthened relationships between employees and their leaders (Willis, July 20, 2020)
● As a multi-national company, DHL emphasized communication in the CIS program, using native speakers to translate the
curriculum to into 42 languages. (Willis, July 20, 2020)
● Ch 8: What training and development including employee orientation, is implemented by the company for their employees and
their managers?
- Ken believes that with focus on your core business comes growth. “Employees must know intimately every detail of
your business. This is why you need to educate the salespeople a lot as well.” (Willis, July 20, 2020)
- At DHL, “Everyone's a salesperson.” But they know they sell more than just products, they sell core business and
value. “Don't sell price,” Ken says. “I think that's one of the pitfalls that people fall into.” (Willis, July 20, 2020)
- Learn your company’s strengths and ensure everyone at the company is on the same page. Tap in with people leaders
to ensure they have tools to communicate the core business with their teams. (Willis, July 20, 2020)
- Employee orientation: “Ideally it should help them start becoming emotionally attached to and engaged in the firm” (Dessler,
page 238, para. 2, 2021)
● EEO(Equal Employee Opportunity): “Very important in the company as everyone gets the same treatment and there is no
unfair pay or promotion.” (Dr. Giunta, November 2, 2021)
Performance Management (Fletch)
● Gen Z’ers want a stable paycheck and have a ‘do it myself’ attitude. This can result into loneliness and therefore it is good
to provide them with face to face communication so they feel welcome and safe which will boost their overall
performance. (Dr. Giunta, October 19, 2021)
● In 2018, DHL introduced a new framework of leadership attributes for all white-collar workers, built around working with
qualities such as results orientation, purpose, and a positive attitude to change – what DHL calls “Head, Heart, and Guts”. This
reflected their commitment not just to developing common leadership qualities and skills to drive their business in the future,
but also to embedding principles such as diversity and inclusion at every level. In 2020, these attributes have also undoubtedly
helped to build the resilience of their company against the various challenges that have arisen every day. (Rosenberg,
February 22, 2021)
● Ch 9: How does the employee company appraise their employees? Do they do frequent employee feedback, appraisal meetings? Do
they do formal meetings?
- DHL has introduced Supervisor Academies to specifically target the development of the group of future leaders, but they have
seen that it is also crucial to encourage regular interactions around performance. In order to maintain a high level of
standardization or because a component of their performance system is closely tied to the annual financial reporting structure,
for example, supplementing annual reviews with mid-year reviews and regular performance dialogs can be an effective way of
addressing this and driving engagement. (Rosenberg, February 22, 2021)
- appraisal involves more than forms. It also requires setting performance standards, and assumes that the employee receives
the training, feedback, and incentives required to eliminate performance deficiency. (Dessler, Page. 279, Para. 2, 2021)
● VP of Adelphoi Mike Ziemianski- Where to find talent to have good performance in the company
- Finding talent - demographics of supply
- US census (Mike Ziemianski, Adelphoi and Elliott Group Panel, 2021)
- Bureau of labor statistics (Mike Ziemianski, Adelphoi and Elliott Group Panel, 2021)
Health and Safety (Angelos)
● DHL Freight commits to the ISO 45001 Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) management principles
1. We strive to provide safe and healthy workplaces, by preventing work-related injury and ill
health, as well as by pro-actively improving our OHS performance. ISO 45001 is the world’s
international standard for occupational health and safety, issued to protect employees and visitors
from work-related accidents and diseases.
● (Dessler, 519, Intro to health and safety) Dressler gives us examples why health and safety are
really important. Companies can lose millions if someone gets injured.
● At the panel at November 4, Michelle Monroe, Manager, HR Business Partners, MSA - Safety- Emp.
Rel., talked about the pandemic and how important is to keep safe your employees. She
mentioned examples about the pandemic how they dealt with it, so they can all stay safe.
● (Giunta, September 16, 2021)After the pandemic, a lot of companies had to change the ways they
used to work and work from home. This changed a lot in the workforce, but health and safety is
the number one priority and a company has to look out for their employees.
How?
- Taking responsibility to take health and safety leadership in our daily business
- Assessing and managing risks across our business activities to mitigate injury and ill-health
- Establishing minimum performance standards and basic safety rules for operational
locations, compatible with legal requirements and industry norms.
- Learning from incidents and near misses through open reporting and root cause analysis
leading to an appropriate corrective and/or preventative action.
- Eliminating unsafe acts and conditions by establishing an inclusive and proactive safety
culture
- Working with our staff, contractors, and customers to promote best practice and continuous
improvement
- Establishing a process to capture and report People KPIs consistent with DPDHL HR
guidelines
Supply chain (Brice)
● Each year, DHL Supply Chain North America transports more than 20 million parcels. Many commercial operations use the help of
DHL transportation planners for routing and cost-cutting. Certain package deliveries are ultimately subcontracted to businesses other
than DHL, their applications include make–buy decisions, unlike traditional vehicle routing problems, which use only a single method
of transportation. Time regulation refers to the fact that the problem takes into account not just delivery windows, but also stopover
and transportation time constraints. The Network Mode Optimization Tool, which they developed, is an ant-colony optimization-
based application that helps DHL Supply Chain transportation experts find cost savings in the ground logistic network.DHL and its
clients have saved millions of dollars each year by utilizing the NMOT. In addition, the NMOT is assisting DHL in gaining new
customers by undercutting bidding competitors and lowering estimated timeframes from weeks to hours. The results demonstrate a
real improvement in earnings of more than 15% as compared to the prior procedure, thanks to a mix of new projects enabled and
lower current operational costs.(Dang, Y., Singh, M., & Allen, T. T. (2021).
● 83% of employees at DHL Supply Chain say it is a great place to work compared to 59% of employees at a typical U.S.-based
company. ( Great Place to Work, 2019)
● 88% When you join the company, you are made to feel welcome. ( Great Place to Work, 2019)
● 87% I am given the resources and equipment to do my job. ( Great Place to Work, 2019)
● 87% When I look at what we accomplish, I feel a sense of pride. ( Great Place to Work, 2019)
● 85% I am treated as a full member here regardless of my position. ( Great Place to Work, 2019)
Employee Engagement
● “Now more than ever, employee engagement and appreciation should take center stage,” said DHL CEO Mike Parra.
○ Broaden and Reinforce Communications
○ Amplify Recognition and Incentive Programs
○ Continue Community Involvement
○ 3 C’s: Calm, Confident, Courageous
● “In the current climate, it is easy for business leaders to be sidetracked by new, daily challenges and the overarching crisis that we are all
encountering. But we must not forget those at the heart of our mission – the people who drive our organizations into the future: our dedicated
employees” (Parra, 2021).
● The most direct ways to encourage employee engagement are to measure the extent to which managers are encouraging their subordinates to
be engaged, and to use incentives to reward supervisors for improving employee engagement. Even more important than the rewards
themselves, getting employees involved in developing the rewards programs was the “gold standard” for building employee cooperation and
commitment. (Dessler Chapter 13, page 411)
● Employer Brand should have the image of the organization as a great place to work in the minds of current employees and key stakeholders in
the external market (active and passive) and the strategy that can become a distinct competitive advantage. (Giunta, October 25 2021)
● Research has pointed to the importance of social climate in fostering employee engagement at work. However, employees' and managers'
perceptions can differ and these may have unique implications for employee engagement. ( SHRM). Communication has a key role in social
climate, which affects employee engagement, Employees want: motivated, good attitudes, career development, job security, and job
involvement. (SHRM).
