INTRODUCTION
Communicative Style
Your communication style is the way you interact
with others, and it determines how you speak, act,
and react in various situations. We are going to learn
communicative styles, such as: intimate, casual,
frozen, formal, and consultative through knowing
their linguistic content, intended audience, content
communicated, and examples.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of this lesson, you will be
able to:
1 Identify the kinds of communicative
styles; and B

2 Use appropriate communicative

style that suits to various situations
FORMAL
● This type uses formal words and
expressions and is mostly seen in
writing rather than speaking.
● It also disallows the use of
ellipsis, contractions, and
qualifying modal adverbials.
FORMAL
● For example, more formal language is routinely
used in a professional setting (on a business trip
or at a meeting), at certain places in a city (a
church/synagogue/mosque, bank, library, high-end
department store, government building), and in
specific situations (job interview, dinner party,
prestigious ceremony, or when speaking
respectfully to a superior).
FORMAL
● It is a straightforward speech.
● You also use formal language in academic
papers, official documents, speeches, books,
news reports, articles and business letters.

Look at the example:

Dr. Lady: Good morning, this is Dr. Lady. May I speak to Sir
Mike, please?
Ben: Good morning, hold on please. I will put you through.
Dr. Lady: Thank you.
Ben: You are welcome. I am terribly sorry Sir Mike is not
available at the moment. Would you like to leave a message?
Dr. Lady: Yes please. Could you tell him that Dr. Lady Cruz
called about the schedule of his mom’s surgery?
Ben: Yes, of course.
Dr. Lady: Thank you very much, good day!
Ben: Goodbye!
Casual
● It is known to be the “ informal
style” of speaking
● It is usually used between
friends, close neighbors,
relatives, or insiders who have
things to share.
● It uses slang or vernacular
language.
Casual
● Free and easy participation of the speakers and
listeners.
● It is usually used with the people of the same
age and personality as yours.
Example Conversation 1:
Person 1: Hey beshie, it’s me! How are you?
Person 2: Hi ............! I’m good, and you?
Person 1: I’m great! Do you want to go to the cinema
tonight? They are showing Twilight!
Person 2: Emmm.. Sounds fun! What time shall we go?
Person 1: There is a showing at seven o’clock.
Person 2: Perfect, I’ll buy popcorn if you buy a drink!
Person 1: Ok, no problem. See you later!
Person 2: Cool, see you in a bit!
Example Conversation 2:
Person 1: Bro, I got a question!
Person2: Sure, bro! Spill it!
Person 1: Who’s the king of school supplies?
Person 2: Is that a joke, bro? No, idea.
Person 1: Simple, bro! It’s the RULER! Hahaha. Funny,
right?
Person 2: Um… Cool! You still need to work on your
jokes better next time. Hahaha.
Consultative
● It is a semi-formal situation where a
speaker needs to provide
background information because
the listener may not be able to
understand without it. Background
information is important for
feedback. There is a “presence of
advise.”
Consultative
● Sometimes it can be referred to as “unplanned
speech”.
● It is used in business or another professional
situation
● Speaker chooses the words with some care, but
the flow of the conversation is instantaneous.
● Example scenes include business consultation,
teacher-to-student advice, banking transaction,
legal concerns, and others.
Example Conversation:
Doctor: Yes, tell me. What problems you have?
Patient: I am suffering from stomachache and
motions since last night. I have also vomited a few
times last night.
Doctor: What did you have yesterday?
Patient: I had some snacks on the roadside stalls. It
could be because of it.
Doctor: It is possible that you had contaminated
food. Because of diarrhea, you have lost plenty of
body fluids. You require to be hydrated. Drink
enough water regularly, at least 10-12 glasses. Mix
some Glucon-D powder or Electoral in water and
have it. Fruit juice is also fine. Avoid caffeine, dairy
products, and solid foods at least till evening. And
get plenty of rest.
Patient: Any medicines, doctor.
Doctor: Yes, I am prescribing a few to control
diarrhea.
Patient: Thank you, doctor.
Example Conversation:
Teacher: How have you been? You’ve been
incurring absences lately.

Student: Ma’am, I was absent for three days.

Teacher: Why?
Student: I had high fever. We even went to the
hospital to get my medication. I apologize.
Teacher: Oh, sorry to know that. You missed a lot of
quizzes. Approach your subject teachers for all the
activities you’ve missed. You can also include your
medical certificate for the proof of your medication.

Student: Yes, ma’am. I will also certainly do what

you have advised. Thank you!
Frozen
● Also known as fixed speech.
● It is the highest form of
communicative style which is
often used in respectful
situations or formal
ceremonies like
Shakespearean plays,
weddings, funerals, and more.
Frozen
● Other Examples are Pledge of Allegiance or the
Preamble to the Constitution, speeches,
proclamations and formal announcements
● It uses the complex grammatical sentence
structure and vocabulary that are only known by
experts in that field.

Look at the given example:

Palawan State University Vision
“An internationally recognized university that provides
relevant and innovative education and research for
lifelong learning and sustainable development.”

Palawan State University Mission

“The Palawan State University is committed to
upgrade the quality of life of the people by providing
higher education opportunities through excellent
instruction, research, extension, production services
and transnational collaboration and innovations.”
Intimate
● It is used in talks between two
very close individuals.
● It is described by an economy
of words, with a high chance of
nonverbal communication. Like
casual, there is also a free and
easy participation of both
speaker and listener.
Intimate
● Grammar and proper word choice
are not given importance.
● Further, this is considered as a
private conversation because it is
reserved for close family
members, relatives, closest
friends. and even girlfriend or
boyfriend. (Joos: 1976:156)
Example:
Conversation of a couple:
Daniel: Happy anniversary, sweetheart!
Kathryn: Oh, thank you! I love the flowers.
They’re my favorite.
Daniel: I want you to know that I am grateful and
happy for having you in my life.
Kathryn: I am more blessed to have you,
sweetheart.
Examples of Intimate Speech:
● Good morning, my love.
● Honey, you look very beautiful in that white
gown.
● I think we are perfect together, don’t you
agree, my darling?
● Sweetie, don’t run around too fast or you
might fall down.
