ART PRODUCTION
• So as not to threaten sustainability of our forests, there are policies,
moratoria, and laws that disallow timber extraction in old growth forests
and in critical areas as steep slopes, above 1000m elevation, stream banks,
and wilderness areas for conservation of bio-diversity and gene pools.

• This has affected over 2,500 business establishments in the furniture


export industry. This has also affected furniture craftsmen who had to look
for alternative materials.

• The most popular are plastic monobloc lightweight stackable
polypropylene chairs, and metal combined with abaca and other
plant-based but durable materials. Despite these limitations, the
Filipino furniture craftsmen are preferred in many countries of the
globe.

• According to the Chamber of Furniture Industries of the Philippines


(CFIP) that the Filipino craftsmen are preferred in many countries
of the globe.

• The unparalleled design and craftsmanship of locally-manufactured
furniture pieces have earned for Philippine furniture a prime spot in
the world market.

• The Philippine industry continues to be on of the country’s highest


export sales earner.

• The famous one has been educated abroad and have good exposure
to modern furniture as the are well-travelled and have interacted with
western and Asian furniture designer.

Contemporary furniture designers in the Philippines are not very
many. The famous ones have been educated abroad and have good
exposure to modern furniture as they are well-travelled and have
interacted with Western and Asian Furniture designers.

Many furniture designers are found in Cebu,
Davao, Pampanga, Isabel, and Ilocos and most of
them still carry the more tradition designs that
match local architecture.

Showroom exemplifies his aesthetics,
a contemporary space with Asian
elements culled from years of
working in Indonesia and Malaysia

In Cebu, furniture designers D'oro Barandino, Kenneth
Cobonpue, Debbie Pala°, Bernice Montenegro,
Ferdinand "Aztick" Villarin, and Rodriguez sisters Vikki
and Paula, exhibited world-class pieces of furniture at
SM City in January 2015. The local furniture products
use combination of geometric and organic, hand-woven
nylon rope, pliable rattan with rigid steel and solid form
with transparent volume.

The collection consisted of furniture that manifests
integration of material, function and form,
characterized by elegance and sophistication. The
exhibition shows how Cebuano furniture designers
make local products as pieces of art that meet both
local and global demands.

Just like in any visual art, the viewer has to understand the
qualities of contemporary furniture to be able to appreciate
it. You have learned that contemporary furniture designers
do not only consider form and function. They use
technology, new materials, and measurements that fit the
physical size, comfort, demands, and movement of the
users.
