ECM157 – INTRODUCTION TO CIVIL ENGINEERING
Construction Engineering
- combination of engineering knowledge and
management skills.
Construction engineers :
To plan and complete projects designed by architects
and consulting engineers.
In charge the entire project from start to finish
including financial planning, labour coordination and
supervision.
Responsible to project cost estimating and scheduling.
Accountable to the choice of construction methods,
material and equipment.
MUHAMMAD ISHA ISMAIL
ECM157 – INTRODUCTION TO CIVIL ENGINEERING
What are current civil engineering
challenges in construction ??
MUHAMMAD ISHA ISMAIL
ECM157 – INTRODUCTION TO CIVIL ENGINEERING
Environmental Engineering
- Develop technical solution to environmental problem.
Environmental Engineers :
• Prevent, control or remediate environmental hazards such
as pollution in water, air and land.
• Work in areas that related to:
Provision of safe drinking
Disposal and recycling of waste and hazardous waste
Provision of municipal services such as sewer, water
mains and garbage disposal, air pollution, reclamation
of industrial land and cleanups at sea such as from oil
spills

Geotechnical Engineering
- Concerned with analysis of the properties of soils and
rocks that support and influence the behaviour of
structure, pavements and underground facilities.
Geotechnical Engineers :
• Evaluate the potential settlement of buildings, the
stability of slope and fills etc.
• Investigate existing subsurface conditions (tunnels
excavations, pipelines).
• Design earthworks and foundations for proposed
structures.
• Assess risks posed by site conditions such as
earthquake, landslides, sinkholes etc.
MUHAMMAD ISHA ISMAIL
ECM157 – INTRODUCTION TO CIVIL ENGINEERING
Prior to construction, a subsurface investigation is
essential to assess site conditions and identify situations
affecting the performance or longevity of a project.
MUHAMMAD ISHA ISMAIL
ECM157 – INTRODUCTION TO CIVIL ENGINEERING
Structural Engineering
- responsible for planning and design of all types of
structures.
Structural Engineers :
• Ensure the structures are built to be strong enough to
resist all appropriate structural loads (e.g., gravity,
wind, snow, rain, seismic - earthquake)
• Analyse the forces that each structure must withstand.
• Ensure all structural members and connections are safe,
stable, effective and economical.
• Select appropriate construction materials.

Transportation Engineering
- It is the science of safe and efficient movement of
people and goods.

Water Resource Engineering
- concerned with the control and use of water including
flood control and protection.
Water Resource Engineers :
• Improved facilities to enhance the cleansing effects of
Wastewater treatment plant
• Create systems to increase the effectiveness and
efficiency of Water Distribution, Wastewater and Storm
water Sewer Systems
• Irrigation Engineering
• Hydraulic Structures (reservoirs, floodways, dams, dykes,
spillways & sluice gates, channels, water intakes)

Materials Engineering
• Deals with ceramics such as concrete, mix asphalt concrete,
metals, cement, sands, lime, bricks, stones, ferrous and non
ferrous materials, timber, paints, plastics etc.
• Focus around increased strength, metals such as aluminum,
steel, glass, alloys, gypsum, tiles, and carbon fibers.
• Materials engineers develop, process, and test materials
used to create a range of products that meet certain
mechanical, electrical, and chemical requirements.

ECM157 – INTRODUCTION TO CIVIL ENGINEERING
Coastal Engineering
• Coastal engineering is involved in measurement,
modeling and simulation of waves and currents with
possible interaction with structures.
• The field also related with aspects of nearshore
oceanography, marine geology, and often directed at
combating erosion of coasts.
• Coastal engineers also
work with ports.
MUHAMMAD ISHA ISMAIL
ECM157 – INTRODUCTION TO CIVIL ENGINEERING
Urban and Municipal Engineering
• Concerned with municipal infrastructure.
• Involves specifying, design, constructing, and
maintaining streets, sidewalks, water supply networks,
sewers, street lighting, municipal solid waste
management and disposal, public parks and bicycle
paths.
• It can also include the optimizing of garbage collection
and bus service networks.
• Municipal engineering focuses on the coordination of
these infrastructure networks and services, as they are
often built simultaneously, and managed by the same
municipal authority.

ECM157 – INTRODUCTION TO CIVIL ENGINEERING
Public Health Engineering
Responsible for provision of drinking water
supply, sewerage system, hygiene facilities and
a healthy environment to the public.

TUTORIAL
The state government of Sarawak has approved the proposed new
Samarahan Expressway project. The project would be implemented in
the 12th Malaysia Plan (2021-2025). The Samarahan Expressway is an
alternative road bypassing the Kuching Business District and
connecting Santubong to Samarahan. Five roundabouts along the
Kuching-Samarahan Expressway will be upgraded under this project to
overcome the problem of road congestion in Kuching and Samarahan.
The new Samarahan Expressway would be connected to Kuching
through the bridge. Identify TWO (2) engineers in civil engineering
that will be involved in this project and elaborate each of their
responsibilities.
