PSCAD is a software for power system computer-aided design and simulation. It allows modeling of electrical circuits and components, running simulations, and viewing results dynamically through online graphs and meters. Key applications include contingency analysis, relay coordination studies, harmonic analysis, control system design, and investigating new circuit concepts. The document then provides step-by-step instructions on using PSCAD to build and run a power flow simulation case with various electrical components like generators, transmission lines, transformers, loads and measurement devices.

Power Systems Computer Aided Design
INTRODUCTION
PSCAD – Power Systems Computer Aided Design: Features
Graphical user interface for circuit modelling and simulation. Online plotting functions, controls and meters are included. The parameters can be changed during simulation. APPLICATIONS
Contingency studies of AC networks.
Relay coordination. Transformer saturation effects. Insulation coordination of transformers, breakers and arrestors. Impulse testing of transformers. Sub-synchronous resonance (SSR) studies of networks. Evaluation of filter design. Harmonic analysis including resonance. Control system design and coordination of FACTS and HVDC. Optimal design of controller parameters. Investigation of new circuit and control concepts. Lightning strikes, faults or breaker operations. Adding a new case/ Loading an existing project Can add a new project: File New Case Can load an existing file using ‘Load Project Workspace Master Library Double click ‘Master Library’ in workspace Master Library

• The PSCAD can be used to analyse power flow.
• Here a Kundur two area system is taken for the power flow study. STEPS Creating a new project Start All Programs PSCAD PSCAD Professional Add a new project: File New Case File Save Project As Adding elements Go to master library Copy the element Click on the project name in the workspace Paste it in the design editor For source, take Three Phase Voltage Source Model2 Entering data Double click on the element and enter the data Connecting elements Go to electrical palette Click on ‘wire’ Click on the design editor Connect it with source model Adding Bus Go to master library Go to passive elements, take ‘Bus’ Enter the data Adding Transformer Go to master library Go to transformers, take ‘3 Phase 2 winding transformer’ Enter the data Adding Transmission line Go to master library Go to Transmission lines, take ‘Bus’ Enter the data
Click ‘Edit’ button
Now the following window will appear. Delete ‘Frequency Dependent Model Options’
Go to master library Transmission lines
Copy the following models and paste instead of Frequency Dependent Model Options in the ‘Edit’ window. Adding Load Go to master library Go to Passive elements, take ‘Fixed Load’ Enter the data Adding Multimeter Go to master library Go to Meters, take ‘Multimeter’ Enter the data Connecting elements Copy and paste required number of components and enter corresponding data. Connect all the components with wire Now the diagram will be as follows Adding Signal Go to control palette Take ’Data Label’ Enter the signal name Adding Output Channel Go to control palette Take ‘Output Channel’ Enter the Title Adding Graph Right click on the ‘ Output Channel’ Select ‘Graphs/Meters/Controls‘ or ‘Input/ Output reference’ Add Overlay Graph with Signal Now the Graph will appear
Double click inside the graph
Change the properties Now the Graph will appear
Can edit X axis properties by double clicking on the X axis
Running the system Click on the ‘ Run’ button. Observe the graph. Observe the graph.
