Instructions

In 2021 the Baja SAE Design Report and Spec Sheet were replaced by the Design Review
Briefing (DRB), in 2022 we will use the DRB as well. The following .ppt is the template for the
DRB and can be used . Each team is required to use this format. Minor modifications made to
the template are allowed, but keep in mind the score sheets are aligned with the template. It is
also required to convert your .ppt to a .pdf (Maximum file size = 25MB), save it as
“University_Name_2022_Baja_SAE_DRB” and submit to BajaSAE.net by the date posted on
BajaSAE.net for the event you will attending.

For additional information on the 2022 Baja SAE

Design event go to www.bajasae.net/go/downloads
Delete this slide and yellow boxes before converting to .pdf

OVERALL VEHICLE PRESENTATION
• Top 2 – 8 Vehicle Goals
o Goals should be measurable such that you can quantitatively determine success or failure
o Vehicle level goals and requirements should cascade into subsystem and component
requirements

3
OVERALL VEHICLE PRESENTATION – GOALS AND REQUIREMENTS
Requirement Design Target / Why this target was Result Notes: (analysis, testing, additional
Goal chosen details)
Curb Weight 300lbs Lightweight is sweet 370lbs Lightweight is sweet, but breaking stuff sucks
Weight Bias Front / Rear
Wheelbase 60"
Overall Width (Outside edge of widest rims) 60"
Overall Height (ground to top of roll cage) 60" It’s a cube, cool right?
Ground Clearance
Tire Size 30" Who doesn't love big tires? 23" broke all the axles, figured out our analysis was
garbage, redid the analysis based on the failures,
figured out the tires were too big
Front Suspension Type
Front Suspension Travel 10" More travel = more smoother 6" Dang driveline engineer didn't check the PAD, broke
all the axles again. Did the PAD, figured out 6" of
travel was all the DOJs could handle
Rear Suspension Type
Update content with real goals,
Rear Suspension Travel requirements, results and notes
Steering Wheel Rotations lock to lock
Outside Turn Radius
Top Speed 50 mph SPPPPPEEEEEEEDDDDDDD 35 mph Remember that whole 30" tire thing a few lines up?
Yeah… it goes slower with the same gear ratio and
23" tires.
Acceleration Time (100ft, 150ft)
Driveline Type (CVT, Sequential, eCVT) ECVT Electric stuff is trendy! CVT Electrical stuff is hard!
4x4 Type (Chain, Shaft, Hydraulic…)
Vehicle Life Target (miles/hours) 2.5 hours Mini Endurance Race, Yay! ??? Anyone's guess, didn't you read the previous lines?

Key Features 4 wheel steer Last year's car had it 4 wheel steer "Last year's team did the analysis"

SYSTEM INTEGRATION
Benchmarking
• How did you achieve the measurable data for your vehicle goals?
o Past years vehicles
o Competitor vehicles
o Other vehicles in the market today

• What evaluation/testing was completed?

• How does your vehicle goals compare to the benchmark data collected?
o Equivalent to, better than by XX%, …

Ensure 4wd/Awd is
included if part of design
SYSTEM INTEGRATION
Research
• What research was conducted to help identify potential options that could achieve the vehicle goals
o What technologies or designs were available to help achieve the goal
o What resources were available to your team that you utilized

• List out all the options that were considered and what goal(s) it could potentially help achieve

Ensure 4wd/Awd is
included if part of design
SYSTEM INTEGRATION
Component & Subsystem Selection
• How did you select the components/subsystems used?
o Packaging study
o Feasibility study
o Preliminary analysis
o Preliminary test data
o List of pros & cons for each option
o Decision matrix

• What components/subsystems did you ultimately select for your vehicle?

o Work above should support your decision

Ensure 4wd/Awd is
included if part of design
SYSTEM INTEGRATION
Subsystem Integration
• Show how the subsystems were integrated into your vehicle
o CAD showing final placement and interaction with other systems
o How were interface points between subsystems designed (Example: how were the suspension points integrated into the
chassis to make sure they meet the design requirements)
o Explain how the team worked through trade offs when subsystems had competing priorities. What redesign steps were
taken to resolve these issues. How did you choose what to prioritize? (Example: front steering rack placement for optimum
steering geometry prevented brake and accelerator pedal from being in optimum ergonomic position for the driver)

Ensure 4wd/Awd is
included if part of design
SYSTEM INTEGRATION
Component/Subsystem Integration Analysis
• Show what analysis was done to ensure subsystems were designed to work well with each other
(Examples: full vehicle dynamic suspension evaluation to ensure the front and rear suspensions work
together to meet vehicle goals. FEA of driveline loads into the chassis to ensure mounting of driveline
components is sufficient)

• Explain how analysis boundary conditions and loads were chosen

• Demonstrate how the analysis impacted the design of the vehicle. Show analysis before and after a
design change and explain how the change improved meeting your design goals

• How did the analysis correlate back to physical test results

Ensure 4wd/Awd is
included if part of design
SYSTEM INTEGRATION
Component/Subsystem Integration Testing
• What physical subsystem or vehicle testing was conducted to demonstrate that your vehicle was
capable of meeting your goals?

• What measurable data was collected and how did that compare to the measurable goals you set?

• How did the data that was collected correlate back to your analysis?

• Demonstrate how the testing results impacted the design of the vehicle. Show test results before and
after a design change and explain how the change improved meeting your design goals

Ensure 4wd/Awd is
included if part of design
SYSTEM INTEGRATION
Assessment Of Vehicle Goals
• Compare the top vehicle goals to what the team actual achieved

• What goals did the team succeed at and what goals did the team come up short

• For the goals that you came up short on what was the root cause

Ensure 4wd/Awd is
included if part of design
