TOPIC: EQUATION OF A
Finding the equation of a line

PRACTICE #1

A. Given a graph
m=2
y  2x 1

b=1
m = 3/2
3
y x2
2

b = -2
FINDING THE
EQUATION OF A
LINE
GIVEN:
A POINT AND Y-
INTERCEPT
Examples:
1. ( 5, 8) ; y-intercept (3)
y = mx + b -5m = -5
8 = m(5) + 3
-5 -5
8 = 5m + 3
m=1
-5m = 3 – 8
y=x+3
EQUATION
Graph:
● point

● b

y=x+3
PRACTICE #2:
Find the equation
of a line, then
graph.
1. y-intercept or b = 6 , ( 8, 4)

2. y-intercept or b = -3, ( 7, -10)

Solution and Answer for #1
1. ( 8, 4) ; y-intercept (6)
y = mx + b -8m = 2
4 = m(8) + 6 -8 -8
4 = 8m + 6
m = -1/4
-8m = -4 + 6
y = -1/4 x + 6
EQUATION
Graph:( 8, 4) ; y-intercept (6)

●6

y =- x + 6 (8,4)
Solution and Answer for #1
2. ( 7, -10) ; y-intercept (-3)
y = mx + b -7m = 7
-10 = m(7) - 3 -7 -7
-10 = 7m - 3
m = -1
-7m = 10 - 3
y = -x - 3
EQUATION
Graph:( 7, -10) ; y-intercept (-3)

y=-x-3

Graphing and
Finding the
Equation of a Line
GIVEN: TWO
POINTS
Formulas to use if the given are
two points:
y  mx  b
or
y2  y1
y  y1  x  x1 
x2  x1
EXAMPLE: Finding the equation of a line:
1.Given: (-4,-2)(-3,5)
m = 7 y = mx + b
-2 = 7(-4) + b
-b = -28 + 2
(-b = -26)-1
b = 26 y = 7x + 26
Other solution:
1. Given: (-4,-2)(-3,5)
y 2  y1
y  y1  x  x1 
x2  x1
y – (-2) = 5 – (-2) ( x – (-4) )
-3 – (-4)
y+2= 5+2 (x+4)
-3 + 4
y+2= 7(x+
4)
y = 7x1 + 28 - 2
y = 7x + 26
 4,2
 3,5

y  7 x  26
PRACTICE #3:
Graph and find the
equation of a line given
two points.
1.( 1,2 ) ( 3, 4 )
Finding the equation of a line:
1.Given: (1,2)(3,4)
m = 1 y = mx + b
SOLUTION:
2 = 1(1) + b
-b = 1 – 2
- b = -1
-1 (-b = -1)-1
b=1 y = x +1
Graph: (3,-1) , ( 7,-5)

y = -x + 2 (3,-1)

PROBLEMS INVOLVING LINEAR EQUATION
IN TWO VARIABLES:

 Rolando Garcia and Cris Fernando were close

friends. Both of them were in Grade 8. Studying
the slope of a line, made them realize if how far
is their house from each other. If the house of
Garcia’s family is located at (2,8) while
Fernando’s family is at (-5, 1) we will be able to
know the distance if we find the slope(m). Also
find y-intercept(b), equation, then graph.
SOLUTION:
m= = = 1
y=x+6
Y-intercept:
8 = 1(2) + b
8–2=b
b=6

Equation:
y=x+6
