INTRODUCTION
OF OIL PALM:
Oil palm or the scientific name is Elaeis guineensis,
African tree in the palm family, cultivated as a
source of oil. The oil palm is grown extensively in
its native West and Central Africa, as well as in
Malaysia and Indonesia. Palm oil, obtained from
the fruits, is used in making soaps, cosmetics,
candles and many more.

PRACTICES OF
OIL PALM
1) WEEDING
2) FERTILIZATION/MANURING
3) HARVESTING
AGR 182 3
WEEDING
WHAT IS WEED?
Not intentionally planted
Unwanted plant
Interfere with human activities
AGR 182 5
THE IMPORTANCE OF WEEDING
Reduce competition to the oil palm trees to earn water, fertilizer, light
and spaces.
Facilitate maintenance work
Maximize results
Ensure the farm are always safe to work

TYPES OF WEEDS
TAPERED LEAF WEED WIDE LEAF WEED FERN
DICRANOPTERIS LINEARIS ( RESAM )
PASPALUM CONJUGATUM ( RUMPUT KERBAU )
MIKANIA MICRANTHA ( ULAM TIKUS )

FERTILIZATION
MANURING
THE IMPORTANCE OF FERTILIZER
Improve growth and productiveness of plants
Enhance the natural fertility of the soil
Provide nutrients that not available in the soil
Balance nutrients for better produce quality and higher yield
Proper fertilizer management is vital to attain efficient uptake, high yield,
& maximizing profitability
AGR 182 9
MANURING: TYPE OF FERTILIZERS
Straight Fertilizer
Mixture Fertilizer
Compound Fertilizer
Controlled Release Fertilizer
Organic Fertilizer

PALM NUTRITION : MACRONUTRIENTS
Nitrogen (N)
Requires in large amount for plant growth
Plant’s vitamins & energy
Phosphorus (P)
For root development during establishment and early stage
Potassium (K)
For proper stomata function (photosynthesis and transpiration)
Magnesium (Mg)
Constituent of chlorophyll and number of plant enzyme system
AGR 182 11
MANURING: APPLICATION METHODS
Manual broadcasting
Mechanical spreader
Semi-mechanical application
Sub-soil application
AGR 182 12
HARVESTING
HARVESTING OF OIL PALM
When the fruits begin to turn red
When 5 or 6 fruits drop to the ground
Start harvesting at about 26 - 36 months after planting
Good maintained harvesting path to ease the harvesting activity
