Complementary Angles

 Complementary angles are 2

angles whose measures have
a sum of 90 degrees

 Complementary angles can be

adjacent or nonadjacent

Supplementary Angles

 Supplementary angles are 2

angles whose measures have
a sum of 180 degrees.

 Supplementary angles can be

adjacent or nonadjacent.

Adjacent Angles

 Adjacent angles are two

angles that lie in the same
plane, have a common vertex, 1 2
and a common side, but no
common interior point.

3 4
Vertical Angles

 Vertical angles are two

nonadjacent angles formed
by two intersecting lines
4
3 1
 Vertical angles are ALWAYS 2
congruent

Angles 1 and 3 are vertical;

Angles 2 and 4 are vertical.
Linear Pair

 A linear pair is a pair of

adjacent angles whose
noncommon sides are
opposite rays. 2
1

 Linear pairs have a sum of

180 degrees.
Angles 1 and 2 form a linear pair
Perpendicular Lines

 Perpendicular lines intersect to

form 4 right angles
 Perpendicular lines intersect to
form congruent adjacent angles
 Segments and rays can be
perpendicular to lines or other
segments and rays
 The right angle symbol in the figure
indicates the lines are
perpendicular

Problem 1
∠1 and ∠2 are supplementary angles. If m∠1 = 7x and m∠2 = 2x, find
the measure of the 2 angles.
Problem 2
∠A and ∠B form a linear pair. If m∠A = x and m∠B = 2x – 3 , find the
measure of the 2 angles.
Problem 3
∠2 and ∠3 are vertical angles. If m∠2 = 4x + 7 and m∠3 = 5x – 8 , find
the measure of the 2 angles.
Problem 4
∠C and ∠D are complementary angles. If m∠C = x and m∠D = 2x – 15,
find the measure of the 2 angles.
Problem 5
∠5 and ∠6 are vertical angles. If m∠5 = 10x and m∠6 = 18 + x, find the
measure of the 2 angles.
SW #1
1.) ∠1 and ∠2 are supplementary angles. If m∠1 = 6x and m∠2 = 4x,
find the measure of the 2 angles.
2.) ∠A and ∠B form a linear pair. If m∠A = x and m∠B = 2x + 3, find the
measure of the 2 angles.
3.) ∠2 and ∠3 are vertical angles. If m∠2 = 4x + 9 and m∠3 = 5x – 6 ,
find the measure of the 2 angles.
4.) ∠C and ∠D are complementary angles. If m∠C = x + 5 and
m∠D = 2x + 10, find the measure of the 2 angles.
5.) ∠5 and ∠6 are supplementary angles. If m∠5 = 4x + 9 and
m∠6 = 3x – 4, find the measure of the 2 angles.
