DEFINITION, CONCEPTS &
TERMINOLOGY
Torkildsen, 1992
• latin word “recreatio” which is restoration to health, or “re-creo, break meaning ‘create again,
refresh and invigorate’.

• “….as personal experience (what it does to a person) as activities (the form it takes), or as an
institution ( the structure in which it is made available to the community).” Or in another way, as
‘a process (what happens to individual) and as a structure (the frame work in which recreation is
practiced).

• Recreation can be defined as voluntary participation in leisure activities that are meaningful and
enjoyable to the person involved.
Outdoor Recreation
• Recreational activities utilizing a close interaction with the natural environment that contain
elements of real or perceived risk and danger, in which the outcome, while uncertain, can be
influenced by the participant and circumstance (Ewert, 1987).

Outdoor Pursuits
• a subset of outdoors recreation. They represent the self-propelled action performed in an outdoor
setting. Some common examples include walking, backpacking, sailing, kayaking, rafting and
canoeing. They do not include other outdoor activities that are motorized nor animal powered.
RECREATION MOVEMENT IN
MALAYSIA
• RECREATION has started as sports event before Malaysia become independent and recreation
movements are being promoted aggressively in the year 1980s.

• This is a result of the “National Sports Policy” formulated by the Ministry of Youth and Sports
(KBS).

• Among the main objectives of the National Sports Policy are the promotions of mass participation
in order to identify talents for sporting excellence as well as to promote healthy and active lifestyles
for all Malaysia through “SUKAN UNTUK SEMUA” and “MALAYSIA CERGAS” Campaign.

• The establishment of voluntary organization in the field of outdoor recreation and their umbrella
body the Malaysia Physical Recreation Council (MARFIMA) in 1980’s by KBS.

• Recreation activities is wide, but those which are being promoted by the KBS are mainly
concerned with outdoor such as mountaineering, camping, hiking and canoeing.

• In 1994, KBS with the idea and initiative of the its Minister Dato’Abdul Ghani Othman
introduced RAKAN MUDA programme for the youth of which the highest response was the
Gaya Hidup Sihat through “RAKAN REKREASI”.

• In 1996, the “MALAYSIA CERGAS” programmed was reintroduced to promote healthy


lifestyles among the Malaysian.
TYPES OF RECREATIONAL
ACTIVITIES
Travelling activities: walking, hiking, biking, boating, horseriding, driving for pleasure,
sailing, canoeing.

Social activities: games and sports, camping, picnicking, swimming.

High Adventure activities: survival trips, backpacking, mountaineering, whitewater rafting.

Aesthetic/Artistic activities: photography, sightseeing, painting, and crafts, nature study.

Survival Replay: fishing, hunting, camping. (Phipps, 1990)
