TERMINOLOGIES IN
BADMINTON
Some terms you must understand and be use in the game
Attack - Usually means smashing
everything and forcing your
opponent to make mistakes.
Cross court - a hit from one
side of the court directly to the
opposite side of the opponent’s court
Fault - violation of the playing
rules, either in serving, receiving,
or during play

Flight - the path which the
shuttle follows after being struck.
Kill - Fast, downward shot
that cannot be returned
Love - it means zero (0)or no score. The game starts with
the scoring of Love all which means 0-0
Some terms you must understand and be use in the game
Let - is called to end the rally to replay the point, the score
doesn't change and the same server serves again to the same
receiving player
Match - A series of games to determine a winner.
Match point - the final point in a match; or the winning point on the
third game.
Service - stroke used to put the shuttlecock into play at the start of
a rally.
Stroke - A forward movement of the player’s racket

Rally - Exchange of shots while the shuttle is in play.

Service Court - the area into which the serve must be delivered.

REFEREE
- To run the tournament
- Calls the final decisions
- Keeps the score
- Checks the equipment
- Enforces fair play
- Timekeeper for intervals
- Schedule the match and practices
UMPIRE
- The maximum authority in a particular match
and it is in charge of the court.
- To enforce the laws of the game
- Update knowledge of the rules
- Use appropriate hand signals
- Responsibility to judge service faults (in the
absence of the service judge) and other player faults.
UMPIRE
- Keeps a record of any misbehaviour or incident and
reports it to the referee.
- Responsible for keeping the match score, which will
be announced after each point of the match
- Has control over the specific match but also needs
to report any serious acts to the referee
- Deals with player behavior

- responsible for making a ‘service fault’ call and to provide shuttles to the
